Quick Look

Ever since the Cadillac ATS came onto the market, Canadians fell in love with its good looks. But the question is, does it drive as good as it looks? The 2014 Cadillac ATS provides power and luxury at a great value. For an American car, it sure gives its European counterparts something to worry about.

Full Review

The main thing about the 2014 Cadillac ATS is presence. The design is coherent with the lines leading around the car from all angles; the result is classy and luxurious. It also makes the car look larger than it really is, despite the fact that it’s the exact same dimensions as its direct competitor: the BMW 3 series.

The high rear deck with sharp lines defining the tail lights make the 2014 ATS one of the more nicely proportioned cars on the market. There’s nothing droopy or out of place on this car, there’s just enough detail to make it more sophisticated than American cars usually appear. The 2014 Cadillac ATS also features polarized waterfall lights, a beautiful accent to the mean stare of the front grille. It’s also a nice change from the rest of the back who are trying to copy Audi’s lighting style.

Inside the 2014 ATS you’ll find a beautiful chocolate brown interior and some really nice soft-touch material, higher quality than what was expected. The interior handles are simply beautiful sculptures and bring together the elegant twists in the door. The center console is a little bit confusing and is hard to use while driving. The icons on the touchscreen are too small and the system isn’t very responsive. The shiny buttons for the climate controls are also magnets for finger smudges, something you definitely don’t want to see in a luxury sports car.

The seats in the 2014 Cadillac ATS are extremely firm, but comfortable. However they are particularly wide, so people on the smaller spectrum may have a hard time finding a comfortable position for themselves. The back seat is tight when it comes to leg and headroom, the front seat should definitely be reserved for taller passengers.

The 2014 Cadillac ATS has more horsepower than the BMW 3 series. The 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine will get you 321-horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. This engine has been featured in several GM products and provides a lot of grunt in the ATS. However, it doesn’t have the same insane thrust as the BMW 328i or the frenetic nature of a Lexus IS 350.

Despite being one of the few cars in its class with a six-speed transmission, it really doesn’t take advantage of the power the engine offers. You really have to push the engine and beg it to switch gears for you. However, a great aspect of the 2014 Cadillac ATS is the precision and agility of the car. The harder you drive the car, the more you realize how much balance and performance is lurking inside the chassis. This vehicle has so little body roll it feels like it’s in a completely different class of vehicles when you put it in sport mode.

The 2014 Cadillac ATS is a great luxury car that will be sure to satisfy the sophistication you’re looking for. The amazing handling and handsome exterior styling are only a few features that make this car a great choice.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Cadillac ATS runs in a tough crowd; and ultimately what matters can be distilled down to a single question: Is it as much of a performance benchmark--in terms of technology, numbers, and seat-of-the-pants thrills--as the BMW 3-Series? The ATS performance story boils down to one question: is it the street-gripping, tach-ripping trump card to BMW's 3-Series, the car that just about every luxury brand calls its benchmark?

While you may never convince a Bimmerphile that a Cadillac could come close to the 3-Series' near-mystical handling, the truth is that it's right up in the 3er's face. With a lighter curb weight and better suspension design, the ATS is the best balanced, most controllable, and most tossable Cadillac, ever; it takes all that the CTS has done well, and amplifies them.

We also think that the 2014 ATS also is the most fully realized Cadillac ever launched, in terms of its drivetrain configurations and handling permutations. With powertrains ranging from merely responsive to very quick, there's enough to satisfy a wide range of driving-enthusiast wants and needs.

The centerpiece of the lineup is a thrusty turbo four-cylinder coupled to rear- or all-wheel drive, manual or automatic six-speed transmission, base or FE3 suspension tuning and magnetic shocks. It's bracketed by an outspoken, muscular six-cylinder teamed with the automatic and rear- or all-wheel drive.

The 2014 Cadillac ATS is one of the better models for fuel economy in this class of sport sedans, but it isn't the efficiency leader.

The base 2.5-liter four in the ATS is rated at 10.69/7.35L/100km, with the turbocharged 2.0-liter four earning the same ratings. At the other extreme, V-6 models earn 12.38L/100km city, 8.4 highway, or 13.07/9.05 with all-wheel drive.

Turbocharged 2.0T models stand in the middle, with ratings of 11.2/7.59 with rear-wheel drive, or 11.76/7.8 with all-wheel drive. Those numbers are a bit below those of the BMW 328i, which also includes stop-start technology, a potential fuel-saver in sluggish commuter traffic. There's also Audi's latest A4, with an eight-speed automatic--rated at 9.8/7.59 mpg.

Interiors and Special Features:

Offering a well-finished assortment of real wood and supple leather and leatherette trims set off with plated-metal and carbon-fiber accents, the Cadillac ATS features a wraparound dash, driver-centric controls, LED gauges and subtle ambient lighting. While in no danger of putting Audi out of business, the ATS cabin is much more elegant than might be expected, which is a very good sign in a luxury-car interior. Front-seat legroom is adult-sized, but headroom can get cramped with the sunroof. In classic compact-sedan fashion, rear legroom can be described as iffy, but not excruciatingly so.

The standard equipment content on the 2014 Cadillac ATS expands as you move from the base (Standard) model up through the Luxury, Performance and Premium grades, but even the Standard ATS comes with a full range of attractions. Want the easy life? Power-assist everything, dual-zone automatic climate control, 7-speaker Bose audio and Bluetooth hands-free connectivity are all yours. Want peace of mind? Eight airbags and Front and Rear Automatic Braking that can prevent low-speed impacts are looking out for you. The magical Cadillac CUE infotainment interface and Bose Cabin Surround Sound system adorn higher-grade ATS versions, with navigation included as standard on Premium models.

As with the standard features, available extras for the ATS are somewhat trim-grade dependent. Beyond available all-wheel drive and a 6-speed manual transmission on the rear-drive 2.0-liter turbo model, key ATS upgrades include a comprehensive array of safety-oriented features, including Full-Speed Range Adaptive Cruise Control, Adaptive Forward Lighting, Lane Departure Warning, Side Blind Zone Alert and Brake Pre-Fill Automatic Collision Preparation.

Safety features:

Standard safety features for the 2014 Cadillac ATS include antilock disc brakes, traction control, stability control, active front head restraints, front-seat side and knee airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Also standard is OnStar, which includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking, stolen vehicle assistance and turn-by-turn navigation.

Optional safety items are included in the aforementioned Driver Awareness (forward collision alert, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, automatic wipers and rear seat side airbags) and Driver Assist packages (adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and collision mitigation with brake assist). Note that the collision mitigation system that's part of the Driver Assist package will automatically apply the brakes in both low-speed forward and rearward potential collision situations -- an unusual feature in this price range. A rearview camera is optional on the base model and standard on the Luxury, Performance and Premium.

In Edmunds brake testing, an ATS 3.6 Premium with summer tires came to a stop from 60 mph in 108 feet, while a 2.0T with summer tires required a bit more at 112 feet. An ATS 3.6 Performance with all-season tires did it in 113 feet. All three distances are average for this class of vehicle with these tire types.
