Quick Look

The 2014 BMW 428i xDrive is exactly the sort of vehicle you expect it to be, given its $49,000 price tag and impressive brand. Its 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine is imposing enough, but the xDrive version lacks the eight-speed automatic transmission found in all the other 4-Series models, which leaves the drivers with only a six-speed manual.

Full Review

The 2014 BMW 428i xDrive is a proud member of the 4-Series lineup, which is essentially a selection of coupes. At some point, the 4-Series was actually known as the 3-Series Coupe, but times have clearly changed, with BMW deeming it necessary to give the coupe its own “series.” The 428i xDrive is the pricier version of the 428i since it’s an all-wheel-drive vehicle, costing $49,000. In contrast, the 435i xDrive model costs $55,600. So, which one should you pick? This will largely depend on what kind of engine you want.

On the outside, the 2014 428i xDrive looks no different from the other 4-Series vehicles. In a nutshell, it looks almost exactly the same the 3-Series coupe, but there are several differences that should be noted. First of all, the car sits a bit lower than those coupes, while being somewhat larger. You also get a set of headlights that merge with BMW’s signature two-kidney grille, while being complemented by two boomerang-like vents that sit behind the front wheel wells. Just like the 435i version, the 428i comes with a dual exhaust outlet, but the one in the 435i version looks sportier. The “xDrive” badging is also featured throughout the design, along with a sleek crease on the side.

Inside, the new BMW 428i xDrive offers space for four passengers – and enough of it for everyone, especially for those sitting at the front. The back seats are a bit more cramped, but that’s to be expected in a coupe. The best position belongs to the driver of course, who gets easy-to-reach controls and a much more user-friendly version of iDrive. The driver also gets to enjoy a head-up display that provides information on speed as well as navigation functions, though those can be tough to see for some people. There are a few other issues, like overly small mirrors and visors that can’t properly block out the sun, which is unthinkable in a luxury vehicle such as this one. That said, the cabin is decent enough to be worthy of the “BMW” badge.

Under the hood you’ll find a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, which can pump out 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. Unfortunately, this xDrive model is the only car in the 4-Series lineup that does not offer the eight-speed automatic transmission that’s available in all the others. Instead, you get a six-speed manual transmission, which is a no-cost option in the other versions. If you want a mix of both, you should check out the Audi A5.

Overall, the 2014 BMW 428i xDrive is almost exactly the kind of vehicle you’d expect it to be, given the price tag and brand. However, certain features like small visors are somewhat disappointing, so keep those in mind when you’re examining this little gem.

Power and Performance:

The 428i uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder to generate 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, which puts it within reach of 60 mph in 5.7 seconds with either the manual or automatic transmission and with grippy summer tires. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2014 BMW 428i xDrive's 4-passenger cabin is comfortable for those in front and just adequate for two people in back. Not surprisingly, the driving position is very good. Controls are within reach, and iDrive is getting easier to operate. If your front-seat passenger plans to apply makeup, she should bring her own mirror – those in BMWs are surprisingly small. Another downside is that the visors don't extend to block the sun, a pity in a $40,000-plus luxury vehicle. The available head-up display offers information such as speed and navigation functions, but can be difficult to discern when wearing sunglasses.

Safety features:

Every 2014 BMW 428i xDrive comes standard with antilock brakes, traction and stability control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, front knee airbags and rollover protection (convertible). Simulated panic stops from 60 mph at our test track demonstrated excellent brakes, with stops between 110 and 113 feet for the coupe on summer tires.

The stability control system integrates several features designed to improve braking performance, such as periodically wiping the brake rotors dry when the windshield wipers are in use and automatically snugging the pads to the rotors when the driver abruptly lifts off the throttle. BMW Assist emergency communications is standard and includes automatic crash notification, stolen vehicle recovery and on-demand roadside assistance. A visit to the options list will provide parking sensors (front and rear), a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring, a lane departure warning system and an automated parking system.
