Full Review

As far as family crossovers go, the 2014 Acura RDX is not our top choice, but it does offer a fair bit of features to stay competitive. In other words, it’s not better than any of its rivals, like the BMW X3 or Audi Q5, but it at least it’s decent.

So, what makes this car decent? Well, let’s start with the fact that its exterior is a marked improvement over the last few models. The ZDX and TL were particularly disastrous for the brand, which is why Nissan has decided to play it safe with this one. Key design features include teardrop windows and a slanting backside, which stands in sharp contrast with a car like the new Honda CR-V, which has a much boxier overall shape. At the front, the 2014 RDX has a bit more style thanks to its aggressive features and fender arches. All-in-all, it’s not a bad-looking car at all. The question is – does it look better than its competitors? Not a chance.

So, what about the inside? Well, on the inside, this baby isn’t particularly outstanding either. But, the key thing to remember is that it’s not bad. This cabin is one of the more clear examples of how form and function can be melded together to create a greater whole. In spite of its aspirations to be more functional, you’ll still find a good amount of soft-touch surfaces and intuitive instrumentation. There are plenty of buttons around the dash and steering wheel, but none of them will confuse you – at least not as much as the centre-console-mounted rotary dials you’ll find in the likes of the BMW X3 and Audi Q5.

Another key feature of this crossover is its use of space. The seats are all comfortable and adjustable – at the front and at the back. In fact, the new Nissan RDX has more back legroom than cars like the Cadillac SRX (which is huge). But, the biggest draw here is the 76.9-cubic-foot cargo capacity, which you can achieve by folding the back seats flat. You also get 60/40 split capability – if you need to carry those bigger items.

So, what about the stuff that we see underneath the hood? Is it any good? Well, truth be told, it’s not bad at all. The only problem you’ll run into is the lack of choices since you can only pick one engine – a 3.5-litre V6, which can yield 273 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque. The same goes for the choice of transmissions – as in, there is no choice. All you get is a six-speed automatic, which is connected to steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Since the standard offering is so good, we won’t criticize the lack of choice. Still, the option to pick either a higher- or lower-tier engine would’ve been appreciated!

There’s no denial that the 2014 Acura RDX is a premium vehicle, which means that it comes with a premium price – $41,190. Does the crossover justify such a high asking price? We believe it does, but mostly due to its high-quality interior. So, before giving this one a look, we definitely suggest to check out the offerings from Acura’s competitors, like the Q5 or X3.

Power and Performance:

Remaining true to its family-centric look, the power behind this vehicle is lacking the turbo-charge you’d expect from a crossover. Instead, what you have is a 3.5-liter V6 VTech engine which offers a smooth, quiet ride. It is rated at 273 horsepower, has 251 pound-feet of torque and is able to go from zero to sixty in 6.5 seconds. The 2014 Acura RDX is an all-wheel drive with shiftable automatic transmission and paddle shifters. It offers decent fuel economy with a rating of 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg for highway driving.

Interiors and Special Features:

This SUV seats 5 with ample rear legroom. The front seat space has an 8-way power adjustable seat with tilt and telescoping steering column, making it readily adjustable to any height. Cargo capacity with all seats down is a spacious 26.1 cu. Ft and 61.3 cu. ft with the seats folded down. When it comes to standard features, the 2014 Acura RDX is top of its class with dual-zone climate control, cruise control, sunroof, heated front seats, keyless entry, push-button start, a rearview camera, leather upholstery, privacy glass and ambient lighting give it a luxurious feel. Meanwhile, technology buffs might appreciate the built-in Bluetooth hands-free calling, USB/iPod/MP3/Auxilliary support, 7-speaker sound system with a CD player, Satellite radio and the navigation system.

Safety features:

Safety is still top of mind for Acura with antilock brake system, front side airbags, side/curtain airbags, active front head restraints, stability control and traction control for the 2014 Acura RDX. Overall, what you have is a crossover that is comfortable, versatile, offers good value for your money and is a perfect fit for today’s modern families.
