About Kia Canada

Kia is a Korean automaker which operates in 155 countries and is globally headquartered in Seoul, Korea. With sales topping over 1.4 million automobiles per year, Kia has grown to become the 4th largest international vehicle manufacturer. As a global brand, Kia has achieved success by tailoring their vehicles to the needs of local markets. This understanding has resulted in investments in design centers, research and development facilities, and assembly factories in North America, Asia, and Europe. The name Kia translates loosely to “rising out of Asia”. Kia’s slogan, “The Power to Surprise”, was formed to emphasize the company’s ideal to continuously innovate in order to surprise customers through surpassing their expectations.

Kia originally began producing bicycles and steel tubing throughout the 1940’s and 1950’s. It was not until 1969 that Kia built its first automobile, a 3-wheeled truck called the T-600. Canada would not get a chance to experience a Kia vehicle until the late 1990’s. When the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group was formed in 1998, the automaker began an aggressive expansion campaign into international markets resulting in the formation of Kia Canada, among many other regional establishments.

Kia’s headquarters in Canada is located in the Toronto, Ontario suburb of Mississauga. However, the company maintains regional offices in Vancouver, British Columbia; Montreal, Quebec; and Halifax, Nova Scotia. The first North American production plant, known as Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia, was established in 2009 in West Point, Georgia, United States with an annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles. The assembly plant is currently producing the Kia Sorento as well as the Hyundai Santa Fe. Kia additionally has research and development and design centers located in Irvine, California and Ann Arbor, Michigan.
