Quick Look

The 2016 Volvo XC90 has a completely new look that will make you think twice about who actually designed it, as it’s very similar to the more upscale SUVs on the market. Don’t be surprised to see Volvo come up with an even more luxurious design in the near future to take on some of the most high-end SUVs around.

Full Review

Volvo has decided to completely reinvent their XC90 line with the newest model. The exterior design is absolutely breathtaking, especially compared to its previous incarnation. Interior design, features and engine have also gone through a significant overhaul – and for the better. This model alone has enough on offer to be considered a luxury SUV, and it definitely wouldn’t be lower-end luxury either. The XC90 is that good.

The base model gets you 19-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, roof rails, fog lights, rearview camera and even rear parking sensors. However, this vehicle isn’t just feature-rich – it’s also beautiful. While driving this luxury SUV, you are bound to get pedestrians to turn their heads. All Volvo did was make the vehicle’s hood flatter and a bit longer, which perfectly enhances the front view of the car, blending with the headlights and the surprisingly unchanged grille. However, this would only be for the base model. As we move up the line of trims the 2016 Volvo XC90 offers, there are even more features.

The Swedish automaker has done a great job with the car’s interior design. The interior is spacious overall, which makes it look very bright and ultimately even more luxurious. The entire basis of the interior design is simplicity, which Volvo has executed perfectly. Moreover, the simplicity it then perfectly complemented by the vehicle’s fine details. For instance, the knobs have a pleasing jewel-faceted surface. There is also an option to add a Bowers & Wilkins audio system, which is usually only found in upscale cars. The dashboard has a nine-inch Sensus touchscreen, which means that the cabin lacks proper buttons and knobs as a result.

Under the hood, the Volvo XC90 offers two powertrains. The base T6 model offers a 316-horsepower turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, which is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The T8 plug-in hybrid model comes with a 60-kilowatt electric motor on the rear axle. This allows the vehicle to run either on an electric motor or a gasoline engine – or both when needed. The fuel efficiency on this vehicle is better than on many other SUVs, but it’s far from being the best in this regard.

Since the 2016 Volvo XC90 has no carryover parts, this can truly be described as “all-new.” This was a bold move by Volvo, and by the looks of this model, it was also a good move.

Power and Performance:

Volvo’s new Drive-E engine family tops out with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which isn’t much motor when you consider that the XC90 weighs between 4600 and 5200 pounds. To make two liters feel like three and a half, a turbocharger and a supercharger inflate the so-called T6 engine’s peak power and low-end responsiveness for a total output of 316 horsepower and a zero-to-60 run in the low six seconds. Married to a polished eight-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive, the T6 delivers the no-drama, easygoing authority that you’d expect from a brand that’s more closely aligned with comfort than sport.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2016 Volvo XC90 boasts a handsome cabin furnished in high-quality materials. A variety of cabin accents, including a few different kinds of genuine wood and even real carbon fiber, spiff things up while the controls, including the large (9-inch) multifunction touchscreen, are laid out in a logical and uncluttered manner.

That new touchscreen is oriented vertically, which Volvo says allows for superior map viewing and menu structures than the typical vehicle touchscreen that's oriented horizontally. It sounds promising, but few automakers in our experience have been able to create a touchscreen-based system that doesn't suffer from delayed responses or driver distraction issues.

Up front, the driver and passenger accommodations are roomy and comfortable. Second-row seating is similarly comfy, thanks to an additional 2.4 inches of legroom there compared with the previous XC90. The third row also has more room than before, but is still best left to smaller folks and children. The available child booster seat built into the center section of the 40/20/40-split second-row bench can be scooted forward to put its occupant within easy reach of parents. However, families with more than one little one should note that Volvo's XC60 and XC70 models offer two of these integrated booster seats.

The XC90 boasts a generous amount of cargo capacity. With all the seats up, there are 15.8 cubic feet available behind the third row. Fold the second- and third-row seats down and maximum capacity stands at 85.7 cubic feet. Both configurations provide capacity that's at the top of the segment. The standard power tailgate includes a "hands-free" feature wherein you only need to wave your foot under the rear bumper to open the lift gate.

Safety features:

The 2016 Volvo XC90's standard safety features include antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side-impact airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and anti-whiplash front seats. Also standard are a rearview camera, frontal-collision warning (including pedestrian/cyclist protection) and automatic braking for frontal-crash mitigation. The new XC90 also debuts with what Volvo calls Run-off Road protection, wherein if the vehicle goes off the road, the seatbelts automatically tighten up and the seat cushions are designed to absorb impact forces should the vehicle come down hard on its suspension.

Safety options include a surround-view camera, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, and a child booster seat built into the center position of the second row.
