This vehicle overall boasts charm and spaciousness.

Full Review

The 2016 Volkswagen Passat is stylish, spacious and feature-packed, remaining an overall reliable family sedan in this years update. Though its exterior profile is minimally upgraded from last year’s model, the Passat’s biggest highlight is found in the incredibly comfortable backseat, which holds the most space of any mid-size sedan in the segment. It’s undoubtedly spacious and a favourite among Volkswagen fans. Equally appreciated is the range of technological features and three diverse drivetrains. As it stands, the Volkswagen Passat is a worthy competitor with more strengths than weaknesses.

Inspired by the family sedans of this fledgling segment, the 2016 Volkswagen Passat takes on more of a conservative but nonetheless attractive outer design in this years update. Keeping with the new design language of Volkswagen, the new Passat features an all-new sheet metal which actually reduces the overall weight of the vehicle by 190 pounds due to the use of lightweight materials like high-strength steel and aluminum. As such, a new fascia adorns the front end with new taillights and a refined grille, while new taillights round out the back end. Overall, the outer body on this vehicle is down to earth and simple.

The interior core of this five-passenger family sedan is inherently comfortable and spacious with plenty of leg and headroom, all of these qualities comprising the Passat’s main highlights. It’s got the biggest back seat in the segment, making it an excellent choice for long distance drives. The cabin is lined with cloth upholstery on the base model and synthetic leather on higher trims, both of which exceptionally detailed and comfortable. As such, higher trims feature sport bucket seats and plenty of knee and legroom, but the latter is a feature common to all trims. Dash and door panelling are lined with nicer, more durable plastics and a choice between wood and metallic trims, both adding to the upscale vibe of this ride. Overall, the Passat’s cabin is designed with a straightforward and traditional objective in mind. Thus, comfort and space are among its top priorities.

Technology has also been made a focus in this year’s upgrade, with a new 6.5-inch touchscreen display adorning the center stack. The system effectively bundles navigation, infotainment, Bluetooth and satellite radio as its main capabilities. But there is also a rear view camera, eight-speaker Fender audio system and ambient lighting available on higher trims. Additional offered are heated and ventilated front seats and smartphone integration.

In terms of performance, the Passat hosts a 2.0-litre turbodiesel inline-four, which delivers 150 horsepower and 238 pound-feet of torque on front-wheel drive. When paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, this unit is rated at an impressive 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres city and 6.2 litres per 100 kilometres city. If the diesel engine isn’t enough power for you, there’s also a 3.6-litre V6 available that delivers 280 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Fuel efficiency is down, however, offering 14.1 litres per 100 kilometres city and 10.1 litres per 100 kilometres highway with automated manual transmission.

Overall, the 2016 Volkswagen Passat boasts space and comfort as its main assets, making this a great family vehicle for long distance driving. Everyday cruising is a breeze when driving this reliable vehicle.

Safety features:

Standard safety features for the 2016 Volkswagen Passat include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front side airbags and front and rear side curtain airbags. A rearview camera is standard on SE, Sport and SEL trims. VW's Car-Net telematics system, standard from the Wolfsburg model on up, includes automatic crash notification, roadside assistance, remote vehicle access, stolen vehicle location and geo-fencing (which allows parents to set boundaries for teenage drivers). A Car-Net smartphone app lets owners control many of these functions on the go. However, features increasingly available on family sedans, such as blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning and frontal collision warning aren't available.
