Quick Look

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma stands intimidatingly on the road while providing a variety of modifications for an improved driving experience. The exterior profile receives some slight changes, sporting a restructured body with high-strength steel, resulting in a lighter vehicle. Likewise, the interior cabin boasts an updated infotainment and navigation system with better functionality. To further assist your payload and towing numbers, the vehicle likewise offers a 3.5-litre V6 as part of its engine line-up, producing 278 horsepower altogether. This attractive midsize pickup is clearly capable and fills your rigorous needs with power and more than enough space.

Full Review

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is an all-around fantastic pickup truck, featuring a refined outer profile, durable interior cabin and sharp engine performance. It is both efficient and manoeuvrable, holding a rugged stance on the road and hosting tons of features that make loading and towing seem like easy tasks. While the cabin is decently comfortable, the engine line-up more importantly features great power for optimal off-roading. As it stands, the 2016 Toyota Tacoma boasts overall utility and handles any job in rough terrain.

On the outside, the 2016 Toyota Tacoma sports a sportier and stronger frame for an overall reliable and durable look that seems to be a requirement for compact pickup trucks. The truck’s been upgraded with high-strength steel, resulting in a significant weight reduction that will aid fuel economy. For the most part, however, the Tacoma carries over relatively unchanged and only features some modifications to the outer profile. Taking on a muscular and more imposing style, the fascia is now adorned with a retouched hexagonal grille and LED daytime running lights.

The Tacoma clearly has a reputation for durability and reliability, and these qualities are undoubtedly transferred into the cabin for a very rugged feel. The layout is rather traditional, but it does take on more of a horizontal shelf-like organization that is used in Toyota’s recent cars. It’s a fresh interior with higher quality materials, new gauges and a multi-information display. The seats are decently comfortable, though not very supportive – but they do the job and provide a good base for off-road driving.

A new centre stack likewise adorns the front-end, and is further equipped with a 6.1-inch display that bundles infotainment functions, navigation, satellite radio, Bluetooth and Siri Eyes Free. It’s further equipped with a wireless phone-charging pad and a Go-Pro camera mount on the windshield. Additional features include dual-zone climate control, heated seats and an available moon roof.

Performance wise, the 2016 Toyota Tacoma offers two carry over engines available for good towing and capability, though the base model does lack in power. This model offers a 2.7-litre inline-four engine that produces 159 horsepower while running on six-speed automatic transmission. The unit is rated at 14.9 litres per 100 kilometres city and 12.3 litres per 100 kilometres highway. If you’re looking for a unit better suited for towing and hauling, the 3.5-litre V6 engine is your best bet, delivering 278 horsepower while running on an all-new six-speed automatic transmission. This unit offers 14.9 litres per 100 kilometres city and 11.8 litres per 100 kilometres highway. Both engines are good for everyday cruising and are capable of taking on the heavy-duty responsibilities of the pickup truck. Depending on the trim level, the new Tacoma can tow up to 6800 pounds or haul up to 1620 pounds.

Standard safety features likewise include antilock brakes and stability and traction control, as well as Hill Descent Control and Trailer Sway Control. Additional provisions include Blind Spot Monitors and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

As it stands, the 2016 Toyota Tacoma has appearances and engine performance covered with refinement. Look no further than this midsize pickup truck if you want a vehicle where towing and hauling is made infinitely easier.

Power and Performance:

The 2016 Tacoma will offer both a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine and a new 3.5-liter V6. The V6 features optimized fuel injection and an Atkinson power cycle (similar to a hybrid) for improved efficiency. This new engine should be among the class leaders -- if not the leader -- in V6 fuel economy. A six-speed automatic transmission is available with both engines, while a six-speed manual will be available for the V6 only. Toyota has not announced any power specifications or fuel economy estimates yet.

Interiors and Special Features:

The interior is much quieter than in the previous Tacoma, courtesy of the new acoustic windshield and use of more sound deadening material. The only downside is that losing the distraction of cabin noise makes it easier to notice the sound of the tires on bad roads. The Tacoma has a fresh interior: there are higher-quality materials throughout, new gauges and multi-information display (you can see off-road settings, fuel economy and more here), and several new colors and materials choices, including available red weatherproof mesh inserts on the doors and dash on the SR5. However, whether you opt for the SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Pro or Limited, you will not be getting power seats.

Safety features:

Limited models get a rear parking assist (sonar) system that’s also optional on all but base SR models. A Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Assist uses rear radar sensors and is also included in the Limited and optional in the TRD models. The Cross Traffic system operates when the vehicle is being reversed at up to 15 mph and will warn of vehicles moving 5 to 18 mph.
