The 2016 Toyota RAV4 is getting a few new changes done to the exterior and interior design, safety features, and the powertrain under the hood.

Full Review

The new 2016 Toyota RAV4 is getting a few new updates done it, nothing major. However Toyota has done a great job of making sure to keep all the key details on the crossover that drivers absolutely loved with the vehicle causing the crossover to only improve. The RAV4 has been a great hit in the past, which only puts more pressure on it to increase its sales since they are already high.

The exterior of the crossover has a few changes done to it. The grille is a horizontal opening at the front with the Toyota logo placed in the middle of it. There is also another part to the grille located underneath the logo. The headlights, which are on the sides of the grille, are connected by the silver bar holding up the logo. The overall shape of the crossover is shaped in a very curvy manner, which helps build its family and friendly look. The fog lights are placed in an opening made with indents under the headlights. The indents accompanying the fog lights help make the crossover look a lot more fun and friendly versus a boring look with no indents. The rear view of the crossover almost resembles some of the Honda models which isn’t a bad thing considering how popular and well-liked the Honda crossovers are.

Toyota has done a great job in blending the look of the exterior designs with the interior. The two-colour choices Toyota has chosen is yet another great idea since the end product of them looks magnificent. The centre console looks a bit too dense and complicated, which may not be too pleasing for some drivers. However it is convenient with the screen since it is controlling the navigation, audio, and Bluetooth. The material used for the dash board and seats were also another nice touch. In terms of space, the RAV4 offers ample room for both drivers and passengers. This feature is essential nowadays as a lot of new cars are deciding to use their excess space on other things.

Under the hood, Toyota offers a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine which is able to produce 176 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. The engine is powered by a 6-speed automatic transmission and runs on a front-wheel drive system as standard. With this engine, the crossover is able to reach 100 kilometres/hour in about 9.2 seconds, which isn’t that fast but it definitely will do for most families. In terms of fuel efficiency, the RAV4 is able to drive 100 kilometres in the city with about 9.8 litres and about 7.6 litres on the highway.

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 is a great crossover and it will be able to cater to a lot of drivers out there. Especially if they are crossover drivers, they will be able to appreciate what this vehicle really has to offer. From details in the exterior and interior designing, all the way to the performance the engines offer, the RAV4 is able to meet all expectations by reporters and everyday-drivers.

Power and Performance:

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 comes with just two powertrain choices: a standard gas engine with automatic transmission, and a hybrid powertrain that's new this year. The new hybrid gives the compact crossover a version with 33 mpg combined gas-mileage ratings, almost a third better than the 25-mpg combined rating of the equivalent all-wheel-drive gasoline model.

The base engine is a 176-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. For the relatively few families who may care about sporty driving, a sport-shift mode makes the automatic more enjoyable. A 0-to-60-mph time of less than 9 seconds is acceptable for its intended use; it's not quick, but it's fast enough for most family needs.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside, the dashboard continues to look busy, but Toyota has upgraded some of the materials and added more storage areas. The changes are incremental, and while the materials are better, what appears to be tasteful two-tone, stitched and padded upholstery on top trims in photos reveals itself to be stamped and molded just like the more basic plastics on low-end models. And the entry-level RAV4 LE continues to have grim, recession-era hard plastics in a more expansive era when even base models of some competitors don't look and feel like punishment for cheapness.

Safety features:

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 improves on the safety ratings of previous years, with top scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a top five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as well.

Early model years of the RA4 had received a 'Poor' rating in the IIHS small-overlap frontal test, which was added starting in 2012 and caught out a lot of smaller models. A running change fixed that last year, and while the IIHS hasn't yet rated the 2016 model, last year's RAV4 got the highest rating of 'Good' on all tests and was dubbed a Top Safety Pick for the year.
