Quick Look

The 2016 Subaru Legacy is relatively good looking, but its biggest assets can be found within the cabin and under the hood if you’re looking for immense space and fuel economy. This year’s upgrade receives slight modifications inside and out, with the most notable changes in improved comfort. Boasting the most amount of space in the segment as a family-sedan, this vehicle is incredibly comfortable to ride in for both everyday driving and long distances. As such, the technology suite is quite advanced, offering great infotainment features as well as tons of safety provisions. It’s likewise outfitted with a standard all-wheel drive drivetrain lineup, with the most powerful unit being a 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine that receives 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres city and 9.7 litres per 100 kilometres highway.

Full Review

The 2016 Subaru Legacy combines practicality and fuel-efficiency as its biggest assets, overall making a great vehicle choice for household driving. This family sedan benefits from superb refinement throughout both interior and exterior profiles, culminating in an overall spacious and incredibly comfortable ride that is very enjoyable to ride in. Equally impressive is the updated control interface which features a multitude of technical gadgets that work to assist and engage the driver. The engine line-up is likewise energetic and quick, and complemented by an extensive list of safety features. This Legacy definitely aims to please in the realm of space, style and fuel economy.

The new Subaru Legacy features a handsome outer profile, but veers away from flashy outer features in favour of a more conservative and toned-down look. Nonetheless, the entire vehicle flows cohesively and attractively, with most of this year’s modifications made at the front end. A hexagonal grille adorns the front fascia with a taller stance, giving the car a more blunt persona at the front end. As such, this year’s Legacy benefits from re-sculpted fenders and revised lower bodywork.

Better building materials and overall refinement further combine to enhance the car’s interior cabin with more comfort, style and functionality in mind. Passengers will undoubtedly sit comfortably in this incredibly spacious cabin, which is the biggest and roomiest sedan in the family-sedan segment. As such, there is more legroom and headroom overall for an altogether comfortable driving experience. Likewise, the cabin is further lined with soft touch materials that now cover the majority of the dashboard and center console. This car is also much quieter as it now features a new acoustic windshield, thicker panels and more noise insulation.

Adorning the center stack is a 6.2-inch touchscreen display that bundles infotainment, navigation, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity. But the real highlight of this technology suite can be found in the Subaru STARLINK smartphone integration program that allows users to connect mobile devices and access select applications and services throughout the touchscreen. The system as a whole uses swipe and scroll functionality and is altogether incredibly easy to use and helpful when driving. Additional features include a standard rear view camera and a 3-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio.

This year’s Subaru Legacy offers standard all-wheel drive across all models, as is common with the brand’s vehicles. Under the hood of this good-looking sedan are two available engine units, both powerful and decently fuel-efficient. Available on the base model is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 175 horsepower ad 174 pound-feet of torque. The more powerful unit, however, is a 3.6-litre six-cylinder that delivers 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. Running on Continuously Variable Transmission, this vehicle offers 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres city and 9.7 litres per 100 kilometres highway.

The Subaru Legacy is amidst the top of its class in safety ratings, featuring numerous provisions that are designed to keep you engaged, assisted and protected. A rear view camera is standard on the base model, along with antilock brakes and stability and traction controls. But higher trims can come with the EyeSight Driver Assist Suite which integrates front camera and sensors to add adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and pre-collision warning. Also available are STARLINK Connected Services, which offers emergency assistance and automatic collision notifications.

As it stands, the 2016 Subaru Legacy features an energetic drivetrain line-up to complement its attractive outer profile and spacious interior cabin. This vehicle definitely stands out as a reliable car for all types of drivers.

Power and Performance:

Two engine choices are available in the 2016 Subaru Legacy sedan: a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder or 3.6-liter 6-cylinder. Both engines have a horizontal or "boxer" configuration. It's called the latter because with engine's horizontal position, the pistons move sideways in and out, similar to a boxer's fists. This configuration reduces vehicle vibration and lowers the Subaru's center of gravity for a stable feel. All Legacy models now use the CVT, which has been refined to feel more like a regular automatic transmission. Fuel economy has been improved in both engines for this new model year, and both can run on regular 87-octane gasoline.

Interiors and Special Features:

It's the biggest and roomiest sedan the brand has ever offered, Subaru says, and also promises the biggest cabin in the family-sedan segment. By the numbers, the 2015 Legacy is 188.8 inches in overall length, and it rides on a 108.3-inch wheelbase. That's a couple of inches wider than before, with 1.6 inches more in wheelbase. It's all obvious from inside, where the cabin feels roomier and wider—thanks in part to seat placement and to the dash corners, which have been pushed farther out to the corners ahead. At the same time, leg room is up significantly—by several inches, compared to before.

Safety features:

The 2016 Subaru Legacy comes standard with stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes, a rearview camera, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and seat cushion airbags that deploy from the seat bottom to help keep occupants in place in a frontal collision. On the Premium and Limited trim levels, the Outback comes with Starlink Connected Services, which includes emergency assistance and automatic collision notification. This can be enhanced with the optional Safety Plus and Security Plus upgrade, which adds remote vehicle access, remote vehicle locating and stolen vehicle recovery.
