Quick Look

The 2016 Scion iM is a good-looking and reliable car that offers plenty of style and comfort for the modern driver. The exterior design is nothing special, taking most styling cues from the Toyota Matrix and offering some slight refinement to the front fascia. The interior, however, is comfortable and offers great space and cargo capacity for all your storage needs. Likewise, its 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine is surprisingly dynamic, producing 137 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque when matched with Continuously Variable Transmission. This year’s upgrade effectively combines overall functionality and comfort into a reliable hatchback.

Full Review

The 2016 Scion iM is definitely stylish and invaluably reliable, remaining an overall great choice for the modern driver. Its exterior and interior profiles are refined with more standout features, which complement the various infotainment features that are embedded into the centre stack. As such, the engine is athletic for a slightly larger vehicle and delivers great fuel economy. There is no doubt this Scion aims to please with great engine performance, comfortable interior detailing and a decently attractive outer body.

On the outside of this attractive Scion is a design that is clearly inspired by the Toyota Matrix, carrying over many of its styling features that culminate in an exterior profile that is overall nothing special. It takes on a stylish sensibility and sporty look, with slight retouches made to the front end. A piano black grille treatment adorns the fascia along with swept headlights and boxed air intakes. These features combine to evoke an outward style of forward motion.

Interior design and quality have further been enhanced in the 2016 Scion iM with the integration of better building materials and overall refinement. With an elegantly lined cabin with richer materials and plenty of space, the new iM is definitely comfortable to ride in for all occupants. Seats can be upholstered with cloth or leather depending on trim, and also benefit from plenty of headroom, though legroom may be a little restricting. It also features plenty of storage for your ultimate convenience, with a cargo capacity of 20.8 cubic feet.

The centre stack looks largely the same, with some round vents and swooping lines to make it stand out from the ordinary. Adorning the dashboard is a seven-inch touchscreen display that is easy to use. The system is relatively simple and straightforward, combining audio functions with Bluetooth and an optional navigation system. Additional features include dual-zone automatic climate control, interior ambient lighting and various sport body enhancements.

The 2016 Scion iM likewise features a reliable engine line-up, carrying over unchanged from last year’s model. The front-wheel drive 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine produces 137 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque on standard six-speed manual transmission. Continuously Variable Transmission is optional, however, and carries a fuel economy of 10.1 litres per 100 kilometres city and 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres highway. Standard safety features include antilock brakes and traction and stability control. But there is also a first-aid kit, tire pressure monitor and temporary spare tire for your personal safety.

As it stands, the 2016 Scion iM features an energetic engine along with some enjoyable exterior and interior features. This vehicle definitely stands out as a reliable car for all types of drivers.

Power and Performance:

The 2016 iM will be offered with Toyota's 1.8-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine under its hood which outputs 137 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque. That's the same engine that you'll find under the hood of the Toyota Corolla -- an older mill that still uses port injection. An interesting surprise is that the hatchback will feature a continuously variable transmission (CVTi-S) with seven-step shifting and a Sport mode.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Scion iM's interior is competitive with other hatchbacks in terms of contemporary design and materials quality. Taller drivers will have enough head- and legroom, but the lack of a telescoping steering wheel extension will force them closer to the dash than they probably prefer. The short seat cushion further supports the notion that this car is intended for smaller occupants. The rear seats provide plenty of adult-sized headroom, but legroom is restrictive, even for smaller passengers. Cargo capacity is smaller than other hatchbacks in this class, with only 20.8 cubic feet available. The upright hatch does provide space for bulkier items, however, and the 60/40-split folding rear seats allow loading of longer items.

Safety features:

While the iM doesn't benefit from driver assists like lane-keeping alerts, it does have what Scion calls the Star Safety System, which includes stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes, a brake assist that adds full pressure during panic braking, and a "smart stop" feature that reduces engine power when the brake and gas pedals are used simultaneously in some situations. The iM comes with a first aid kit, a tire pressure monitor system, and a temporary spare tire.
