Quick Look

The 2016 Nissan Rogue is an especially modern and up-to-date compact crossover for the family that isn’t afraid to take advantage of its numerous technological features. Though the vehicle holds great space and comfort when seating up to five or seven passengers depending on seating configuration, the real focus is on technology. Nissan’s infotainment system is updated with better capabilities and likewise hosts improved safety features. Equally notable is the fuel-efficient 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine under the hood that offers 10.9 litres per 100 kilometres city and 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres highway.

Full Review

The 2016 Nissan Rogue holds comfort and technology as its most valuable assets, which means it’s an incredibly attractive option for families looking for something modern and intuitive. Though its exterior and interior profiles are minimally upgraded in this year’s model, the vehicle is undoubtedly equipped with all the latest gadgets for immense assistance and entertainment. The new Rogue is definitely a competitor in the compact crossover range.

This year’s Nissan Rogue carries over relatively unchanged in terms of exterior appearance, but nonetheless keeps its attractive design that people seem to love. The current model is its most handsome version of itself after years of evolving, so it goes without saying that refinement is the Rogue’s biggest asset. Adorning the front end is a more straightforward grille treatment that is bracketed by angled chrome bars and braced by LED running lamps. As such, the flowing side profile and flared fenders are clearly borrowed from the Juke’s style.

There aren’t too many modifications made to the crossover’s interior profile, but it is outfitted with higher quality textures and lots of soft-touch materials. Seats are bolstered and wide, and are actually inspired by a NASA zero gravity design for incredible comfort. The back seat is equally comfortable, but the feeling diminishes as you get to the tight third row, which seems to be a good spot for kids rather than adults. Opting for two-row seating, however, affords you great storage capability and lots of cargo space with the rows folded flat.

The Rogue’s biggest highlight can be found in its updated technology features, which comprises the basis of this year’s major modifications. Hosted on a five-inch touch screen display is the Nissan Connect system powered by SiriusXM, which can bundle infotainment, navigation, Bluetooth, Bose audio and smartphone integration. It also now features Apple Siri Eyes-Free for your convenience. Other features include automatic climate control, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof and available leather upholstery.

In terms of performance, the Rogue’s base model comes with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. The unit produces a stellar fuel economy of 10.9 litres per 100 kilometres city and 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres highway using standard front-wheel drive. It impressively runs on the class-exclusive, next generation Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), allowing the driver to shift seamlessly across gears and achieve the perfect speed while improving fuel economy.

Safety features include a rear view camera and rear parking sensors, as well as a multi-view camera system which displays a 360-degree view of the car’s surroundings (only available on higher trims). The most useful safety feature, however, is Nissan’s standard Easy Fill Tire Alert, which sounds the horn when you’ve inflated the tires to the recommended pressure. This year’s Rogue also switches blind spot monitoring from camera-based to radar-based.

All in all, the 2016 Nissan Rogue is a great family vehicle that offers great space and comfort for a compact crossover. With relaxation and technology as its main areas of focus, this vehicle will definitely please modern drivers.

Power and Performance:

The Rogue returns with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder and continuously variable transmission (CVT) found in the first-generation crossover. Power output's still fixed at 170 horsepower, though Nissan says 175 pound-feet of torque put the Rogue at the top of the compact-crossover niche.

The Rogue SL also gets SiriusXM-based NissanConnect Services connectivity, which incorporates navigation with Google point-of-interst search, apps for Facebook, Twitter, Pandora, and iHeartRadio, Bluetooth streaming audio, and telematics services like vehicle maintenance reminders and emergency response. Apple phone users can also get Siri Eyes Free voice control in the mid-level Rogue SV Premium Package and Rogue SL. This allows drivers to use the car’s built-in controls for Siri. Generic voice control for certain in-car infotainment functions is also available for non-iOS users.

Safety features:

The Rogue comes standard with stability and traction control, four-wheel antilock disc brakes, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags (for all three rows when equipped), a rearview camera and hill-start assist. The all-wheel-drive system adds hill descent control. Optional safety features (bundled in packages) include a blind-spot warning system, a lane-departure warning system, a forward collision warning system and the Around View camera system. The latter (standard on the SL and optional on the SV) provides a top-down 360-degree view of the Rogue's surroundings when parking, and it can be upgraded with a warning system that notifies you when moving objects enter a camera's view.
