Quick Look

With the Nissan Altima being one of the longest-running models in the Nissan portfolio, they have decided to change things up with a completely new design for their new 2016 model.

Full Review

The Nissan Altima seems like it has been going through an identity crisis as Nissan’s premium sedan. Drivers have realized if they are spending that much money on a premium Nissan sedan they might as well get an entry-level Infinity sedan instead. This crisis has finally forced Nissan to completely redesign the line which they have done with their newest model called, the 2016 Nissan Altima.

Taking a look at the new model’s newly designed exterior, we can see Nissan has done an amazing job. Starting off with the grille, we can see a new design around it. A curved bar that looks almost like a nose ring is placed on the grille almost outlining the Nissan logo. With the curve, it almost seems as if the strong Nissan logo is causing a bend on this metal bar perhaps implying how large and tough the brand is. Next, we can see the indents on the hood is sneakily pointing or drawing more emphasis towards the logo in the centre of the front view. The headlights Nissan has designed looks nice with the side outline using LED lighting, which also seems to be pointing towards the front. As squished as this all sounds, the front view of the car seems to be very well spaced out and every details works well with one another. Moving on to the rear view, the logo is a bit smaller which may be the reason why the bar under it isn’t curved downwards but is curved upwards instead. However, similar to the front, the tail lights are shaped as an arrow pointing towards the Nissan logo.

As we move on inside, we can see Nissan has gone with a sporty look. With a two-colour design, the interior reflects the look of many luxurious sports cars out there. There is an infotainment system in the centre of the front. Both the front seats and back seats seem to be very spacious so moving your legs wouldn’t be a problem even when sitting in the back. The seats and trim have a luxurious and rich look to it. Nothing seems to be cheap and tacky on the inside. There is also an option to include a dual-panel panoramic moon roof, heated and cooled seats, and an 11-speaker Bose audio system with noise cancellation.

Under the hood, Nissan offers a couple of engines. The first being a 3.5-litre V6 engine which is able to produce 270 horsepower. The second is a 2.5-litre V4 engine which is able to produce about 182 horsepower. In terms of fuel efficiency, the 2016 Altima is able to drive 100 kilometres on the highway and city with about 10.7 litres.

The new 2016 Nissan Altima seems to be a great sedan overall which would be able to cater to many drivers out there. It has the power, looks both outside and in, and the interior space to catch the attention from a lot of drivers out there to go out and purchase one.

Power and Performance:

Nissan still offers a pair of engines for the Altima. The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 182 horsepower, and mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT), is tuned for maximum efficiency. Its EPA city rating continues at 27 miles per gallon, but highway mileage gets a single-mpg bump to 39. This means an Altima with the 2.5-liter engine is as frugal as some hybrids. Top-spec Altimas have a quick-footed 3.5-liter V-6 that generates 270 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The larger six isn't nearly as economical as the four, but still manages EPA ratings of 22/32 mpg. Six-cylinder cars also use the CVT--there's no escaping it in the Altima's universe—but they get standard paddle shifters with a manual mode that mimics the gear ratios of a conventional automatic transmission.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Altima remains a five-seater, riding on the same 109.3-inch wheelbase it has for many model years, and it's 191.5 inches long in all. This isn't a problem since the Altima was already big enough for most families. Nissan's spent quality time on the seats, and it's paid off in very comfortable chairs that hold up for hours on end, at least for the front-seat passengers. On base models, the front seats are adjustable six ways for the driver, four for the passenger. A power driver seat and heated front seats are optional. The rear seats are split 60/40 and fold down to expand access to the trunk. This year, Nissan has added acoustic glass and more sound deadening to quiet the cabin.

Safety features:

Safety is just as important as fuel economy when choosing a family car, and Nissan offers all the advanced features currently offered by suppliers. These include: forward-collision warnings with automatic braking; a rearview camera; blind-spot monitors; and lane-departure warning systems. In the past, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given the Altima its Top Safety Pick accolade (with top scores in all but the new small overlap test), while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given it five stars overall for crash-test performance.
