Quick Look

The 2016 Mitsubishi RVR, or more commonly known as the Outlander Sport in the United States, is a good-looking crossover that highlights technology and fuel-efficiency as its biggest assets. At this price point, interior comfort and space is understandable and outer refinement is to be expected. But with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque while delivering 11.8 litres per 100 kilometres city and 9.1 litres per 100 kilometres highway, you can’t really go wrong. Altogether, this is a great everyday crossover for modern drivers.

Full Review

The 2016 Mitsubishi RVR is a great overall crossover, though only slightly upgraded from the outgoing model. It’s very affordable, and the price point matches quality – as seen in the interior cabin that lacks high-quality materials but is nonetheless somewhat comfortable and spacious. The infotainment system, however, is especially diverse and features a variety of components designed to enhance your driving experience. Altogether, the RVR is a great vehicle for everyday driving.

On the outside, the new Mitsubishi carries over relatively unchanged, sporting the same look as the outgoing model in an upgrade that seems rather understated. It still looks like a tall hatchback, but with somehow rounded lines and angled contours to complete the outer profile with sophistication and style. And thanks to sheet metal that differs from that of the Outlander, along with a rising beltline crease, the RVR manages to avoid tank-like appearance. This year’s model also retains the same bumper design, which allows the vehicle to keep its sport look with a blacked-out lower-body aero trim. The RVR is an all-around good-looking crossover.

This year’s upgrade brings minor modifications to the vehicle’s interior, which now highlights improved materials that line the vehicle’s seats, door panels and dashboard. Notably integrating more soft-touch surfaces than some of its rivals, the RVR especially boasts a padded dash cover that not only feels great, but looks good as well. Besides these upscale features, the majority of the interior is expected for the price at which it’s offered. Red gauge illumination and subtle accent lighting are kept within the front-cabin, giving off the sporty vibe that the outer profile projects. Accent lighting is most notably highlighted around the rim of the vehicle’s large sunroof, which is just a cool feature to have overall. More important features, like the FUSE Bluetooth hands-free system hosted on a 7-inch infotainment system, as well as automatic climate control, Sirius XM satellite radio, and a rear view camera are also included in this year’s Mitsubishi RVR.

Under the hood, the 2016 RVR carries over the same engine that’s been present in the last few models – meaning this drivetrain is seriously out-dated. Nonetheless, it’s adequately powerful while holding a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. This unit is paired with Continuously Variable transmission, but a five-speed manual transmission is available as well. The best fuel economy can be found on the front-wheel drive CVT, which is rated at 11.8 litres per 100 kilometres city and 9.1 litres per 100 kilometres highway. These numbers are fairly impressive, given the size and weight of this crossover.

Overall, the 2016 Mitsubishi RVR is a great vehicle and surpasses our expectations only somewhat due to a moderately improved interior cabin. It’s an affordable crossover that does the job, and looks good doing so.

Safety features:

With stability control, anti-lock brakes, and side and side-curtain bags all standard, as well as front knee bags, the Outlander Sport has all the now-requisite items, along with a little more. And we've noticed that, considering the rather thick rear pillar, the elevated seating position in the Outlander Sport offers pretty good outward visibility, although some moms might want to note the omission of a backup camera system from the base ES model; that's now included in the upmarket Outlander Sport SE though.
