Full Review

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is both stylish and comfortable, exhibiting the finest leather upholstery and latest technology software throughout its interior to ease and assist your driving experience. Though both profiles are minimally upgraded from last year’s redesign, the SLK-Class’s biggest highlight can be found under the hood with a new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. The unit impressively delivers 241 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque while paired with an all-new 9-speed automatic transmission. As it stands, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is a worthy competitor in the luxury vehicle segment.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is arguably the best looking compact luxury roadster on the market, offering a distinctive outer profile that is sure to turn heads on the road. On the outside is an elegant but upright profile with sculpted lines and exaggerated trim, making it really stand out on the road. It takes on more of an aggressive styling theme this year, resulting in a more youthful and dynamic look. The front end is noticeably blunt and squared-off with its classic strikethrough grille and the Mercedes star embedded in the middle. Altogether, the SLK-Class is clearly designed with elegance and sophistication in mind.

On the inside, you’ll find qualities like style, comfort and convenience held at the highest standard with Mercedes in order to surround occupants with the most enjoyable driving environment. The cabin is comfortable but can feel a little tight which is normal with small roadsters. But the interior space is excellently designed with a combination of leather, wood, aluminum and carbon fibre adorning most surfaces. There are some adequate storage options in terms of cubbies and compartments, but this is obviously limited with the top down. There is an overall 10.1 cubic feet of space available with the roof up, and 6.4 cubic feet with the top down.

This experience is only enhanced by an abundance of technological capability afforded to occupants, such as now standard dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, ambient lighting and a panoramic sunroof. The updated multimedia system is of more importance, however, which is now displayed on a seven-inch screen floating above the center stack. The COMAND system effectively bundles navigation capability, Bluetooth, smartphone integration and satellite radio, among a variety of other features.

Performance wise, the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class offers one new engine and two carry overs, but all three produce great power for this luxury vehicle. On the new SLK300 is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 241 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with the new 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission. Carried over from the outgoing model are a 3.5-litre V6 and a 5.5-litre V8, each delivering massive power. The latter, for instance, has an output of 415 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque, while paired exclusively with seven-speed automatic transmission. All engines on the SLK-Class run on rear-wheel drive.

A main highlight within the safety realm of this car is the Collision Prevention Assist Plus system which utilizes automatic braking when sensing an imminent collision. Another key provision is the Attention Assist drowsiness monitor, which triggers an audible warning and display message when the system notices erratic steering.

Overall, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is a great luxury roadster that boasts complete refinement across all profiles, as well as excellent drivetrain options. If you’re looking for an impeccably styled vehicle with tons of power, look no further than this vehicle.

Power and Performance:

The new model will employ the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder used in the C-Class instead of the older 1.8-liter turbo four -- a change that bumps horsepower from 201 to 241 and raises torque from 229 to 272 lb-ft. In addition, the SLK 300 packs a new 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic instead of the 6-speed manual, eliminating the last do-it-yourself shifter from M-B's U.S. lineup.

Interiors and Special Features:

However, relative to some other small roadsters (such as Mazda's Miata), interior space is excellent. There's not much to spare, nor is there much room in the trunk with the folding top down—and you can't put it down without first aligning the trunk dividing partition properly—but there's enough space for a weekend retreat for two. A backpack-sized space lies under the flat floor; lift out a formed plastic bin and hide valuables, or flip it on its other side for a shallow well that adds a cubic foot or a little more to the equation. In all, there are 10.1 cubic feet of stowage with the roof up, but only a scant 6.4 cubes when it's out of sight.
