Quick Look

The 2016 Mazda Mazda5 carries over relatively unchanged from the outgoing model but still features some upgrades that make this vehicle more enjoyable to drive. The outer body seems untouched in the redesign, however it does feature more flowing surfaces and accent creases. On the inside is a decently comfortable cabin that lacks premium materials as well as an electronic interface display, instead opting to outfit the center stack with the typical red-barred information display. In terms of power, this vehicle hosts a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 157 horsepower and is paired with five-speed automatic transmission.

Full Review

The 2016 Mazda Mazda5 features a slightly refined exterior body and decently comfortable interior cabin, though both profiles could use serious revamping for an overall more enjoyable ride. The interior feels spacious for the most part but uses copious amounts of low-quality plastic for a vibe that matches the affordable price tag. The center-stack, however, is easy to use and features a variety of convenient components – but it notably lacks a touchscreen display that is commonplace in modern vehicles. The engine, on the other hand, produces substantial power and makes this ride enjoyable to drive.

The 2016 Mazda5 carries over relatively unchanged from the previous year, receiving no major modifications to the outer profile in this years upgrade. The exterior is designed with the goal of making it seem car-like, now featuring a light, lean and dashing appearance for an overall attractive body. Flowing surfaces and creases appear down the fenders on either side, while the previously elongated taillights have now turned horizontal. Overall, the Mazda5 retains its appeal that drivers enjoy so much.

On the inside, however, is a very modern cabin that is also influenced by cars rather than expectedly larger vehicles. The interior is adorned with a simple matte look and bright accents, and features some small aesthetic changes in this years upgrade. Such additions include a few curves added to the instrument panel and rounded climate control vents, as well as central vents that are positioned higher on the center stack. Most of the furnishings feel premium, however running throughout the cabin is a low-quality plastic that feels hard and hollow and completely unlike Mazda interiors. Storage space is substantial though, with the third row seats folding forward to form a flat cargo floor, and the second row can be flipped as well into an almost-flat position.

The new Mazda5 features many convenient technological features, but is notably missing one important component that seems to come standard in almost all new vehicles of 2015. An infotainment and navigation based touch-screen display is evidently lacking in the center stack, depriving drivers and passengers of advanced capability from a technical standpoint. There are, however, other nice features like a leather steering wheel, standard rear parking sensors and automatic climate control, as well as an available power moon roof and SiriusXM satellite radio. Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming is also standard on the Mazda5.

Under the hood of this vehicle is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that produces 157 horsepower and runs on front-wheel drive. This unit notably loses the six-speed manual transmission that was unique to the Mazda5 and made it surprisingly dynamic to drive, now only paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. Nonetheless, the vehicle boasts great steering and feels athletic when cruising. Safety features are likewise lacking in this car, featuring stability control and a throttle brake override system, as well as Bluetooth hands-free calling. Notably missing in this suite of safety provisions are blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning and a rear view camera.

As it stands, the 2016 Mazda Mazda5 receives some slight modifications, but for the most part feels rather out-dated, especially in terms of technological assistance. This vehicle is great for everyday family driving.

Power and Performance:

The only engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 157 horsepower, and it's now paired only with a five-speed automatic that sends power to the front wheels. No one would ever accuse this minivan of being quick, but at least the transmission has well-chosen ratios, giving the 5 decent acceleration. The automatic has a manual-control mode, but there's really no point in revving the engine into its noisy upper reaches.

Interiors and Special Features:

The interior feels modern, more influenced by small cars than larger minivans. It's a simple, matte look, with bright accents throughout and a few curves added to the instrument panel. There are rounded climate control vents at either side, and center vents are high up for better flow. The interior is tastefully understated but frugal to a fault in some areas. For instance, the hard, hollow plastic atop the instrument panel is among the worst we've seen in any vehicle currently on sale. The dull, lightly grained black plastic shifter trim ring is easily scratched, and other plastic items just have a low-rent feel.

Safety features:

Every Mazda 5 comes with standard stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes, front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Rear parking sensors are optional, but items like a rearview camera, blind-spot warning system and forward collision warning system -- all common safety features on larger minivans -- are not available.
