Quick Look

The second addition to this lineup from Lincoln, the MKZ looks and feels incredible. The luxurious and futuristic look was designed by Max Wolff, who has previously worked at Cadillac and Holden.

Full Review

Lincoln has done it again, with its second addition to the MKZ line. The brand has made it even better. Everything about this sedan is just beautiful. Max Wolff, the designer of this vehicle, who also used to work for Cadillac and Holden, has done an incredible job of designing this car in such a futuristic and luxurious way. This is exactly what Lincoln needs right now as it has fallen from being the top-selling luxury brand since 1998. Lincoln has been working even harder to put itself back on top.

The exterior design is absolutely outstanding. The new Lincoln MKZ is equipped with 18-inch wheels, power-folding sideview mirrors, LED taillights and automatic and adaptive LED headlights. At the front, the almost V-shaped grille is attached to the thin headlights complemented by the beautiful Lincoln logo right at the dead centre of the grille. At the back, the sedan’s taillights are connected with each other across the cargo door, which is right under the subtle spoiler designed on top of the door. With these exterior designs, it will attract plenty of attention when on the road.

Inside, the vehicle’s centre stack and console have absolutely no buttons, as it is run completely on touch sensors, which is what makes this car seem so futuristic. A drawback of the new Lincoln MKZ is the lack of adequate passenger space, especially when compared to the Ford Fusion. The Lincoln MKZ also doesn’t have much room for your cargo either, with only 15.4 cubic feet on the regular model and 11.1 cubic feet on the hybrid. In addition to the centre console, the vehicle’s luxurious look is further enhanced by a beautiful silver lining. It starts up on top and follows through until it hits the compartment between the two front seats.

Under the hood, the 2016 Lincoln MKZ offers three engines. The base one is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, which produces 240 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. The second one is a 3.7-litre V6 engine, which pumps out 300 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Finally, the last engine is in fact a hybrid powertrain, which pairs a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing 188 horsepower. All of these options are equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. This luxury sedan isn’t the best vehicle when it comes to fuel efficiency, unless you go with the hybrid option.

This is why the new 2016 Lincoln MKZ is a great car overall and would make a great fit for most drivers out there, thanks to its versatile features. As Lincoln makes its way back to the top, we expect to see more handsome cars like this.

Power and Performance:

The 2016 Lincoln MKS will be offered with a new EcoBoosted 2.9-liter V-6 codenamed Nano, and the proven EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6. The latter power plant will match or exceed the Taurus SHO's 365 horsepower, and we expect the smaller V-6 to produce in the realm of 300 horses. Initially, gear-changes will be handled by a six-speed automatic, but eventually the MKS should be the recipient of the nine-speed auto that’s being jointly developed by Ford and GM. Power will be routed to the front wheels, but all-wheel drive will be an option—and very likely mandatory when paired to the 3.5-liter.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside, the 2016 MKZ's flowing center stack and console, without buttons or knobs, looks mildly futuristic. But while the aesthetic is distinctive, the materials don't go much beyond what you get in the related Fusion. The seemingly brushed metal accents look nice from afar, but are exposed as silver-colored plastic upon closer inspection. Rather than a steering-wheel- or console-mounted gear selector, the MKZ uses dash-mounted selector buttons for the transmission, but they feel somewhat flimsy as they lack any damped, tactile sensation.

The MKZ's styling distinctions also yield slightly less interior space than the Fusion. The high center console can make the front seating area feel a little confining, while the coupelike roof line infringes on the headroom of taller rear-seat passengers. Rear-seat legroom, however, is generous.

The standard MyLincoln Touch (a.k.a. MyFord Touch) system handles Bluetooth, audio, navigation and other vehicle functions via its crisp 8-inch touchscreen. And there's still the useful Sync voice command system that can control many of the car's functions. In practice, however, the touchscreen's processing speeds still seem sluggish during certain tasks, and the center stack's touch-based controls can be fiddly and/or frustrating to use.

The MKZ offers decent trunk space at 15.4 cubic feet, though the hybrid's capacity shrinks to 11.1 cubic feet due to the battery pack. Non-hybrids also feature a 60/40-split folding rear seat.

Safety features:

Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side-impact airbags, front knee airbags, side curtain airbags, a rearview camera and rear parking sensors. The 2016 Lincoln MKZ also features the programmable MyKey system, allowing parents to set limits for vehicle speed and stereo volume for their young drivers. Sync also offers emergency crash notification that automatically dials 911 in the event of an airbag deployment.

Optional equipment includes blind-spot monitoring; rear cross-traffic alerts; a lane-departure warning system; a lane-departure intervention system (which automatically helps the driver keep the car in its lane); a forward-collision warning system with brake priming; and inflatable rear seatbelts.

In Edmunds brake testing, an MKZ with standard all-season tires stopped from 60 mph in 121 feet, an average distance for this segment. The MKZ Hybrid did slightly better at 120 feet.

In government crash testing, the MKZ earned a top five-star rating for overall crash safety, with five stars for total frontal-impact protection and four stars for total side-impact protection. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tests, the MKZ earned a top score of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact, roof-strength and whiplash protection (seatbelts and head restraints) tests. A second-best score of "Acceptable" was awarded for the car's performance in the small-overlap frontal-offset test.
