Full Review

The 2016 Lincoln MKT is stylish, sturdy and feature-packed – making an overall reliable full-size crossover for the modern driver. Though its exterior and interior profiles are minimally upgraded from last years model, Lincoln’s biggest asset is found in the abundant space and storage capability as well as the upgraded infotainment system. Equally appreciated is the option between two powerful engine with decent fuel efficiency for everyday cruising and long trips. As it stands, the 2016 Lincoln MKT is a worthy competitor for reliable modern driving.

Sharing a platform with the Ford Flex means the new Lincoln will take on a boxy, large bodied structure that definitely serves as an intimidating presence on the road. With arching lines and swept-back headlights, the MKT takes on a polarizing, almost brash look that stands out from boring crossovers of the era. The split grille at the front end of the vehicle ensures a modern, more unique attempt at front-fascia design, while a wide ribbon of LED tail lighting adorns the back end. Altogether, this crossover is both classy and contemporary.

On the inside is a spacious and comfortable cabin that seats up to seven passengers and features overall abundance and relaxation. A classy design theme is utilized throughout the interior, boasting higher-end materials like leather and dark wood that take on a darker look to replace the sea of matte metallic materials previously hosted in the vehicle. Across three rows of seats are great space and ample headroom and legroom, providing a great luxury cabin for long trips. While the second row receives heated/cooled bucket seats, the third row is able to fold down for flexible cargo space that is sure to convenience families. There’s also a nifty refrigerated console in the second row to store snacks and drinks, allowing you to make the most out of upscale adventures.

In terms of technology, the center console receives slight upgrades, such as an eight-inch touchscreen that hosts Sync 3, replacing MyLincoln Touch. The system effectively bundles infotainment and navigation with features like Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control and keyless access. It also enables hands-free voice-activated phone control and 911 Assist, which can automatically call for help in an emergency.

Under the hood is a choice of two powertrains, each outfitted with intensely powerful engines to tow this massive machine. The base unit is outfitted with a front-wheel drive 3.7-litre V6 engine that produces 303 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. It offers a fuel economy of 16.6 litres per 100 kilometres city and 11.3 litres per 100 kilometres highway. Alternatively available is a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 that produces 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. This unit is optioned with all-wheel drive and is rated at 17.7 litres per 100 kilometres city and 12.3 litres per 100 kilometres highway. Both engines are incredibly capable but offer less than stellar fuel economy. However, suspension modes are controlled by Lincoln Drive Control, which adjusts steering, throttle and transmission according to Normal, Sport and Comfort modes.

Standard safety features include stability and traction control, antilock brakes and a rear view camera for optimal visibility. Depending on packages, however, are additional provisions like Active Park Assist, lane keeping assist, collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring and adaptive headlamps. Even more convenient is the MyKey program, which can set electronic driving parameters to encourage responsible driving and promote good habits.

All in all, the 2016 Lincoln MKT is an attractive and technologically loaded full-size crossover with lots to offer in terms of style and comfort. If you’re looking for a highly capable and spacious vehicle, this might be the best fit.
