Quick Look

The 2016 Kia Sorento gets a major makeover with cool, exciting designs and features. The new model’s look seems like it may have been inspired by the Kia Cross GT concept, wearing fresh sheetmetal, while riding on a longer wheelbase and featuring a lightly wider frame.

Full Review

Kia has done a great job with their newest addition to the Sorento lineup. They have made many changes since the last model, including making their already largest crossover even larger by widening it. This increase in size makes the 2016 Sorento a lot more comfortable for those in the third row of this family crossover. Kia is making a statement to all of the Sorento’s competitors, including the Toyota Highlander, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Jeep Grand Cherokee that it is now a threat to them.

Kia has not made as many changes to its exterior design, but there are still enough for you to realize a difference in models. Kia went with a duller look for their LED positioning lights, tail lamps and fog lights. The grill is not the best part of the car either, feeling as uninspired as anything else. However, Kia has done other alterations, such as making the lower air intake and fog lamp pockets stand out more, which give the crossover a different look. The 2016 Sorento also boast a more muscular look thanks to its 19-inch wheels and 7.3 inches of ground clearance.

When it comes to the interior design and layout, the 2016 Sorento is a lot more spacious than its previous model. With Kia’s user-friendly controls all over the interior of the vehicle, there should be no difficulty when trying to figure out how to do something. This also goes for the 4.3-inch or 8-inch touchscreen with navigation. This screen is compatible with the crossover’s rearview camera and UVO eServices. It also contains Siri hands-free, numerous smartphone apps and secondary driver security functions, like geo-fencing and speed warning. The top-end EX trim serves up a more luxurious look than the others, but it does so for a much higher price.

Under the hood, Kia is carrying over the two engines from last year, which is a 290-horsepower, 3.3-litre V6 and a 185-horsepower, 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine. However, with the 2016 Kia Sorento, the automaker is adding a new turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, which puts out 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. They can all be equipped with front- or all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic engine. In terms of fuel efficiency, the 2016 Sorento is at 11 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 8 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. Those are solid numbers as far as we are concerned, especially if you consider the size of this vehicle.

The 2016 Kia Sorento is a great crossover, with changes in all the right places. It will be able to cater to more people because of increased interior spacing, fuel efficiency and more luxurious looks done both inside and outside the vehicle.

Power and Performance:

The Sorento is once again available with four- and six-cylinder engines, but for 2016 it gains an intermediate 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that provides better fuel economy than the V6 along with a smooth power delivery that some drivers may prefer. It produces 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque.

The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder now features continuously variable valve timing for improved efficiency. It produces 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, which is a bit less than the last Sorento, but is on par with the four-cylinder available in the Highlander. We didn't get a chance to drive a Sorento with this engine, but given that the vehicle weighs 110 pounds more than the last version, expect it to be slightly slower than before. Kia estimates fuel economy of 25 mpg combined (22/29) with front-wheel drive. This would be 2 mpg combined better than the last Sorento and 3 better than the four-cylinder Highlander, but is 1 mpg shy of the Toyota RAV4 and 2-3 mpg lower than other bigger compact SUVs. Again, it falls somewhere in between the two segments.

Interiors and Special Features:

Although the last-generation Sorento's dimensions differentiated it from compact SUVs, its interior design and quality were in keeping with that less expensive segment. Plastics were hard, the design was rather plain and even when loaded up with every leather-lined and heated extravagance possible, and the cabin never attained a truly luxurious feel.

You can see where this is going. The 2016 Sorento moves up in the world figuratively as well. Although the $25,795 base L trim is a shell of the fully loaded SX-L we drove, every Sorento nevertheless gains an abundance of soft-touch materials with richer textures on its dash and doors. Like an increasing number of redesigned vehicles, stitching has been applied to the dash top to supply a degree of elegance, while available two-tone colour schemes (including those that feature a tasteful light grey across the lower dash portion) create a much warmer, distinctive environment. The top-of-the-line Sorento SX and SX-L models we drove give up nothing in terms of luxury compared to other optioned-out competitors (the title of class best is certainly possible) and really aren't that far away from luxury-branded models.

Safety features:

Safety equipment on all 2016 Sorento models includes front seat-mounted side airbags, side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor, front active headrests, electronic stability control anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, and Hill-Start Assist. And with an all-new structure underpinning it all, the Sorento should make some steps forward in occupant safety.

The Sorento EX, SX, and SX-L get a back-up warning system. But there are other more advanced active-safety features that have joined the lineup this year. For starters, there’s the blind-spot warning system and rear cross-traffic alert, which are included in the SX and SX-L models (and optional on the EX).
