Quick Look

Kia isn’t likely to promote the 2016 Kia Rio as much as some of its other lineups, such as the Kia Soul. The reason for that is simple – this sedan is just not that great. However, those in search of a cheap new car should give it a look.

Full Review

The 2016 Kia Rio wasn’t as heavily promoted by Kia as the new Soul model, which is scary news, because this may be the brand’s way of saying that it doesn’t really care about this lineup anymore. This, of course, may result in its demise. Most changes to the 2016 model involve the sedan’s exterior design, but much has changed otherwise, which may also be the reason why Kia decided not to promote the new model extensively.

The Rio’s grille has morphed a little, but this change isn’t terribly noticeable. Instead of the cage design found on the previous model, the grille now features horizontal lines and boasts a slightly more rectangular shape. Kia has also decided to add circular fog lights, which complement the grille perfectly, along with the headlights, which look a tiny bit sharper around the edges. The rear side of the sedan remains unchanged, however, so don’t even look!

Inside, you will find a neat control panel in a satin finish and a new shiny black centre stack. This new model is also bringing back the Eco Package, which includes a UVO multimedia system and a backup camera. Other features include a centre console armrest and a shifter, black cloth seats with grey leatherette trim, along with grey padded door panel inserts and grey stitching on the steering wheel.

Under the hood of the new Kia Rio is a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, which can push 138 horsepower. The six-speed automatic is the standard transmission since Kia no longer offers a manual option. In terms of fuel efficiency, the new Rio is rated at 9.0 litres per for 100 kilometres in the city, 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway and 7.5 litres per 100 kilometres combined. As you can tell, the Rio’s fuel efficiency is easily its most valuable quality, as if Kia is trying to make for the lack of other worthwhile attributes.

Kia needs to do a better job of promoting the Rio, and perhaps the best way of doing so is to emphasize how fuel-efficient this sedan really is. That being said, the Rio doesn’t really stand apart from its competitors, and the lacklustre presentation in Chicago where the automaker announced the vehicle, may mean that the Rio’s days are numbered.

Power and Performance:

The 2016 Rio with a 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual transmission returns 27 mpg in city driving and 38 mpg on the highway, for a combined rating of 31 mpg. That's an improvement of just 1 mpg over the 2015 Rio in highway driving, but does not change the Rio's 31-mpg average.

A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the 2016 Rio sedan, while a six-speed automatic transmission is standard on the Rio sedan. The six-speed manual is no longer offered in the Rio sedan.

Interiors and Special Features:

Kia says the Rio should be quieter thanks to additional high-density foam inside. Other interior highlights include more satin-finish trim on the control panel and a new shiny black centre stack surround.

Sedan and sedan models will again be available in LX, EX and the top-line SX trim; the new EX Designer Package offers interior upgrades like black cloth seats with grey leatherette trim, along with grey padded door panel inserts and grey stitching on the steering wheel, centre console armrest and shifter. The Eco Package, which returns for 2016, now includes the updated UVO multimedia system and a backup camera.

Safety features:

The Rio’s three trim levels—LX, EX, and SX—are largely unchanged. The parsimonious LX comes with crank windows and manual door locks, although it does offer some niceties, including air conditioning, a six-way manual driver’s seat, satellite radio, USB and auxiliary audio jacks, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. The LX Power package adds keyless entry plus power windows and door locks. LX sedan buyers who spring for the automatic transmission get Bluetooth and Kia's efficiency-minded Active Eco System in the bargain.

The mid-level EX comes standard with power windows, cruise control, remote keyless entry, and a tilt/telescope steering column. For 2016, the available Eco package is upgraded to include a backup camera and Kia’s updated UVO eServices Telematics system. A new Designer package dresses up the interior with natty black cloth and grey leatherette upholstery with grey stitching, padded grey door-panel inserts, as well as grey stitching on the steering wheel, centre-console armrest, and shifter boot.
