Quick Look

The 2016 Hyundai Tucson surprisingly is a great upgrade from its predecessor, since the 2015 model was already such a great car.

Full Review

Even though the Hyundai Tucson is the South Korean automaker’s smallest crossover, it is one of their best selling vehicles. It was already a very reliable vehicle as it had it all when it came to safety features, modern looks, and a strong powertrain, but the Tucson just got better. There are minor adjustments made to this new model but, the attention to detail Hyundai has done with these alterations have the potential to have drivers think this vehicle goes from a great crossover to an amazing crossover.

The exterior of the crossover looks very stylish as it does have some changes to the look of it. The grille is a bit larger than before since there aren’t two parts to it anymore, instead only one whole grille. The Hyundai logo is still placed on it, but it is placed on the grille itself instead of the bar. This helps the crossover look lot cleaner and more like a heavy duty SUV, as this is a typical design for them. The grille is the same shape as any other Hyundai, hexagonal shaped with thin horizontal bars through it. The headlights, which fit perfectly on the corner of the grille, have a thin shape to them and are powered by LED lighting. The fog lights are located underneath the headlights and have two parts to it. The first being a standard looking bulb, and the second part being a strip of LED lighting. The overall size of the crossover has increased, which many drivers will appreciate as the size of the vehicle may have not been large enough for some. The rear view of the vehicle hasn’t changed much. The taillights are similarly shaped as the headlights and they are accompanied by the Hyundai logo in between them.

The interior looks really great, as it is a great transition from a beautiful exterior to an incredible looking interior. The two-coloured theme really adds to the vibes the interior gives off. It helps establish a more hip and modern design for the crossover in case any drivers believe the Tucson looks outdated. The centre console is very well put together as it is very organized and neat. This allows drivers to be able to find what they are looking for as they are driving. The material used for the dash board and seats are pretty good quality, as it looks and feels very comforting. In terms of space, Hyundai has done a great job of utilizing the expansion in the size of the crossover to result in more legroom for drivers and passengers.

Under the hood, Hyundai offers a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine which is able to produce 175 horsepower. The engine is powered by a 7-speed dual clutch transmission and runs on a front-wheel drive system as standard. In terms of fuel efficiency, the Tucson requires about 9.4 litres to drive 100 kilometres in the city, 7.8 litres on the highway, and 8.7 litres for a combination of both the city and highway.

The 2016 Hyundai Tucson is a great crossover overall since it is from a very trusted brand, the specs look very attractive, and the price is very reasonable. Drivers will definitely appreciate the added dimensions to the interior and the increased size of the build. It makes the crossover look and feel a lot like an SUV which makes the Tucson a lot mightier than its competitors.

Power and Performance:

The Eco, Sport, and Limited all use a direct-injection 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). It's rated for 175 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. EPA ratings vary slightly: the front-wheel drive Eco gets 26 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined, while the Sport and Limited return 25 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. So why the difference when they share a drivetrain? According to Hyundai, much of the blame goes to the 19-inch wheels used by the Sport and the Limited -- like the SE, the Eco rides on 17-inch wheels.

Interiors and Special Features:

This upscale feel continues inside where, Hyundai says, Eero Saarinen's TWA terminal at JFK airport inspired the Tucson's dashboard design. (The terminal sits unoccupied today.) It's elegant in its simplicity, thoughtfully laid out, and facilitates and excellent view of the road. Seat design with thick bolsters adds to the upscale look, particularly when upholstered in leather.

Safety features:

The 2016 Tucson hasn't yet been tested and rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but Hyundai expects to receive a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS on Limited Ultimate models equipped with the automatic emergency braking system. This expectation is based in part on the extensive use of high-strength steel in the Tucson's structure.

In addition to rearview cameras, standard safety equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags for the driver and front passenger, and side-curtain airbags for front and rear passengers. A tire pressure monitor indicates the location of an under-inflated tire.
