Quick Look

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata retains its classic features, only receiving slight refinement in terms of exterior appearance and interior comfort. The outer body remains relatively same as the outgoing model with small modifications made to the front fascia, while the interior cabin boasts improved space and a restyled center stack. Available in higher trims is an eight-inch touchscreen interface that bundles a variety of technical features but lacks the cohesion of a central infotainment system like Chevrolet’s MyLink system and MyFord Touch. Nonetheless, this vehicle is comfortable and further features a variety of drivetrain options, such as the eco-friendly 1.6-litre turbocharged engine on a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This is an all-around fantastic midsize sedan for optimal everyday driving.

Full Review

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata, minimally upgraded from the previous year, is well endowed with a sharp style, spacious interior cabin and new engine options – as well as a host of modern technological features. Courageously competing with other models of the midsize sedan range such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, the Sonata might just prevail with appearance alone and is hugely assisted by its fuel-efficient engine lineup that is sure to attract modern drivers. The inside is also incredibly roomy and comfortably seats up to five passengers, while the integrated technology suite is modern but lacks cohesion. As it stands, this vehicle is a worthy long-time competitor with more strengths than weaknesses.

This years Hyundai Sonata feels classier and more sophisticated, while retaining some of its more classic features for an overall stylish ride. Trading some of its sweeping curves for more conservative lines, the new midsize sedan adds more refinement with redesigned taillights and a hexagonal wing grille. Horizontal lines likewise cover the outer body for a toned-down profile while surrounding chrome and dual-exhaust with bright tips give the vehicle more of an upscale persona. Overall, the 2016 Sonata is only refined on the outside for a more modern look.

The inside, however, is built with better building materials – featuring quality door finishes and additional cabin accents. There are also two-tone colour schemes and wood grain trimming for an upscale feel throughout the interior. The vehicle as a whole feels more spacious as there is plenty of room for five passengers and even more trunk space with a 16.3 cubic foot compartment. The center stack is further reorganized and features dedicated buttons for primary functions, such as navigation, phone connectivity, radio and other media. And though a five-inch touch screen interface is standard, the eight-inch interface is moreover surprisingly intuitive and features navigation capability. It also bundles Sirius XM satellite radio, Siri Eyes Free, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for improved driver engagement.

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata further offers an impressive engine lineup with great power and fuel-economy for modern and environmentally friendly drivers. The base model includes a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 184 horsepower on a six-speed automatic transmission. This unit is rated at 11.3 litres per 100 kilometres city and 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres highway. Higher up is an athletic 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 245 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque and delivering a fuel economy of 12.3 litres per 100 kilometres city and 8.8 litres per 100 kilometres highway. The highlight of this drivetrain, however, can be found in the Eco trim, which features a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This unit produces 178 horsepower and is impressively rated at 10.1 litres per 100 kilometres city and 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres highway.

As it stands, the Hyundai Sonata is already a fantastic vehicle and is only upgraded with slight exterior refinement and better drivetrain options. This midsize sedan is great on gas and provides an outstanding everyday ride.

Power and Performance:

Next up is the 2016 Eco trim. The drivetrain in this Sonata is brand new and, assuming we've read the tea leaves correctly, is the future base engine. The Sonata Eco’s 1.6-liter, turbocharged engine is mated to a 7-speed, dual-clutch automatic (often called DCT or DSG). These types of transmissions feature faster shifting and—in some cases—are more fuel efficient. This engine produces a smidge less power than the base Sonata at 178 hp. However, the torque curve will deliver more twist at lower RPMs, meaning the Sonata will feel just as peppy driving around town. Coupled with the extra gear in the transmission, the Eco can deliver a satisfying drive with better fuel economy. The Eco earns an EPA-estimated 32 mpg in combined driving compared to the 28 or 29 mpg rating that 2.4-liter Sonatas get.
