Quick Look

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid differs slightly from the standard sedan as a result of subtle modifications made to the exterior profile, designed to achieve more a mature and traditional look rather than the previously dazzling appearance. The back end notably takes on the most changes for improved aerodynamics. On the inside, however, is a comfortably spacious cabin that likewise features a host of technical capabilities designed to improve your driving experience. And while these components are interesting, its biggest asset is obviously the hybrid drivetrain – sporting a combined electric motor and 2.0 litre four-cylinder gas engine, powered by a 270-volt lithium polymer battery. Altogether, this midsize sedan hybrid receives superb fuel economy and is great for everyday driving.

Full Review

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid features several features that aim to differentiate from its standard sedan counterpart, most notably in its exterior profile and of course, under the hood. While minimally modified on the outside to take on more of an understated appearance, its interior cabin is still comfortable and vastly spacious, seating up to five passengers. Performance wise, this hybrid is decently capable and powerful, sure to please environmentally friendly drivers. Overall, the Sonata Hybrid is an undoubtedly attractive, comfortable and green-driven vehicle.

The new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid takes on more of a conservative and mature look rather than the flashy, gimmicky appearance from previous models. Rather, subtle changes have been made to its outer profile in an effort to differentiate from standard Sonata sedans, specifically with the goal of improving aerodynamics. This hybrid loses the grimaced, aggressive look at the front and adds different fascia contours with slightly restyled headlamps that seem rather understated. Moreover, the back-end receives more major modifications with a new aero rear bumper, small rear trunk-lid spoiler and a downward extending rear diffuser to help with turbulence. Most changes are made with aerodynamics in mind and ultimately work to allow this vehicle to cruise with minimal resistance.

On the inside is a generously spacious cabin with plenty of all-around comfort for both front-seat and backseat passengers. Standard vinyl or available leather upholstery lines the interior, with available heated and ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel for maximum comfort and convenience. Folding rear seatbacks likewise flip forward easily to store cargo, and there’s also great trunk space for extended storage. This year’s hybrid also boasts a super quiet cabin with soft-drive quality for an overall relaxing ride. Standard on the Sonata Hybrid’s center console is also a five-inch colour touchscreen that bundles infotainment, Bluetooth audio, Sirius XM satellite radio and a rear view camera system. There’s also Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity for modern drivers.

The real highlight of this vehicle, of course, can be found under the hood with the hybrid drivetrain lineup. The Sonata Hybrid uses the Hyundai Nu 2.0-litre direct injection four-cylinder engine, which produces 154 horsepower and 140 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with a 38-kW electric motor system attached to a conventional six-speed automatic transmission, further powered by a 270-volt lithium polymer battery. The unit altogether produces 193 horsepower and offers stellar fuel economy with 7.1 litres per 100 kilometres city and 6.4 litres per 100 kilometres highway on base SE models.

Standard safety features on the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid include antilock brakes, stability and traction control, and Hyundai’s Blue Link emergency communications system. This incredibly helpful program offers roadside assistance, crash response, remote door lock control and monitoring features for parents with young drivers. This midsize sedan is very safe and provides maximum protection for drivers of all ages.

As it stands, the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid boasts immense comfort and features a great hybrid drivetrain for eco-friendly drivers. This midsize sedan is among the best if you’re looking for a stylish hybrid.

Power and Performance:

The Sonata Hybrid uses the Hyundai Nu 2.0 gas direct-injection engine, which produces 154 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque. That gas-burning engine interfaces with a Transmission-Mounted Electrical Device, (TMED) which is a fancy way of saying an electric motor and clutch assembly. It joins the six-speed automatic transmission (no CVT) and manages a combined 193 horsepower. Observant readers will discover the 2.0-liter gas engine replaces the old Theta II 2.4-liter multiport-injected four-cylinder engine. Before any power users raise a ruckus, Hyundai engineers claim the smaller engine yields more than 10-percent efficiency over the outgoing mill. The EPA says to look for 39 city/43 highway with a 41 mpg average from this powertrain.

Interiors and Special Features:

Other Hybrids may skimp a bit on overall comfort or usability, but you won’t find that here. Front-seat comfort and space are generous, even for taller drivers, and in back Hyundai claims best-in-class front-seat headroom and legroom for the Sonata Hybrid and Plug-In. While that’s true by the numbers, there are some caveats. This back seat still feels vast and spacious by most accounts, yet we’re still not convinced that there’s an abundance of headroom in back for adults. If those much over six feet tall lean back to a comfortable position in the backseat while keeping upright, contact with the most rearward portion of the roof is likely. And the panoramic roof you get in upper trims, while it brightens the interior, likely doesn’t help things.

Safety features:

Standard safety features on the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid include antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. Also standard is Blue Link, Hyundai's emergency communications system, which offers roadside assistance, crash response, remote door lock control and monitoring features for parents with teenage drivers (including speed limits, curfew limits and geo-fencing).
