Quick Look

The 2016 Hyundai Equus is basically a whole new species from Hyundai’s other lines, with a completely new look and theme to it.

Full Review

The 2016 Hyundai Equus is allowing the South Korean automaker to have a spot in the luxury sedans table. Even though it is hard for it to compete against with top dogs in Germany, they are still up there with them, as the Equus is a very stylish and sleek car. Considering the price, it potentially could be considered a lot better of a deal than some of the German-engineered cars.

The exterior has a very luxurious finish done to its look. Starting off with the grille, it is not similar to any other grille Hyundai released with its other models, this one is completely different. It is designed with horizontal lines through hit and a piece in the middle, dividing the left and right side. The overall shape of the grille is in the shape of a parallelogram. The sides of the grille are almost connected to the headlights, however with a strategic indent made in between the two, the lights look a lot nicer. The headlights are powered by standard lighting giving it a classic look but with a hint of a modern touch since a strip of the light is powered by LED lighting. This strip is most likely used for the nighttime lights, as opposed to the daytime. The fog lights are located where they should be, right under the headlights and are in a similar shape to other Hyundai cars, in a somewhat “L” shape. The bottom bumper has a silver bar connecting the two fog lights together. The rear view almost resembles a German-designed car. It has a very simple look to it with very standard-looking tail lights and the Hyundai logo, but it helps the car build on the luxurious look, as it is classic.

The interior has a very beautiful look to it, especially since it is a great complement to the exterior designing. The colour options allow the interior to stand out a lot, even from the outside. Since the colours chosen are very bright, and the exterior colours that are released are very dark, it makes the interior look very appealing. The centre console looks very classy as the buttons are all laid out in an organized manner. Not to mention it is accompanied by an analog clock, making the look that much more favourable. There is also a display screen, which is just a visual representation of the audio, Bluetooth, navigation system, and climate control. The material used for the dash board and seats are top-notch. As discussed before, the colours Hyundai has released are perfect, but also the feel to it. This top-notch quality leather allows for a much more comfortable drive.

Under the hood, Hyundai uses a 5.0-litre V8 engine which produces 429 horsepower and 367 pound-feet of torque. The engine is powered by only an 8-speed automatic transmission. With this engine, the vehicle is able to reach 100 kilometers/hour in about 6 seconds. In terms of fuel efficiency, the Equus requires about 15.7 litres to drive about 100 kilometres in the city, 10.2 on the highway, and about 13.1 litres with a combination of both the highway and city.

The 2016 Hyundai Equus is a great car overall as it has a very classic look, assisting in the luxurious look of it. There are however a couple of drawbacks to it, including the poor fuel efficiency, but with this poor fuel economy comes more power for drivers to abuse when on the road.

Power and Performance:

One piece of the Equus puzzle that doesn't need changing is its brawny V-8 powertrain. The 429-horsepower V-8 is mated to a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission that you can shift manually when desired. The V-8 is equipped with direct injection, variable valve timing, and tuned variable induction. This potent powertrain can hustle the big sedan to 60 mph in about six seconds—accompanied by, as we've found in previous model years, a rather throaty and pleasant exhaust note. In fact, the V-8 has enough torque (376 lb-ft) to silently break the low-grip tires loose when you stomp on it from a stop; reminiscent of many an early-2000s German sedan. Fuel economy ratings for the Equus are 15 mpg city, 23 highway, 18 mpg combined.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Equus' cabin was reworked for 2014, adding a few distinctive touches. The finishes have been upgraded, and the grades of wood and leather have never been finer. Over our week of testing, we slowly became accustomed to the rotating-wheel controls on the new steering wheel. As before, there are some delicately applied details we like in the Equus’ interior, including the winged metallic trim that surrounds the dash vents, and the big LCD screen that glows with higher-resolution graphics.

Safety features:

The Equus has scored well in the crash tests it has endured thus far. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given it "good" scores in tests performed--but it hasn't performed the important new small-overlap frontal crash, which simulates a collision with a telephone pole or light pole.

The NHTSA hasn't tested the Equus at all.

While its scores are incomplete, the Equus' safety gear is replete with the latest safety technology. In addition to the usual airbags and stability control, the Equus also has front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a rearview camera, and a lane-departure warning system.
