Quick Look

The 2016 Honda Pilot has been redesigned with sharp exterior style, a truly comfortable interior cabin and great drivetrain for the modern driver. Though the crossover only receives slight upgrades to the vehicle’s exterior profile, its body now closely matches the energetic performance of the 3.5-litre V6 engine that sits under the hood. Moreover, the Pilot holds an upgraded electronic interface on the center console, which effectively controls entertainment, communication and navigation from an eight-inch touchscreen. Space is likewise plentiful across three rows of seats, awarding up to seven passengers a truly relaxing ride experience.

Full Review

The 2016 Honda Pilot is sleek, refined and infinitely attractive on the inside and out, sporting a variety of modifications to overall improve style and space for dynamic drivers. Courageously competing with other range models such as the Toyota Highlander and Ford Explorer, the new Pilot boasts immense space for passenger relaxation as well as cargo storage, and likewise features a great engine with decent fuel-economy. The engines energetic drivetrain is closely reflected in the vehicles outer body style, embodying an athletic persona for the midsize crossover. As it stands, this vehicle definitely competes with other crossover heavyweights.

The Honda Pilot is already an immensely attractive vehicle with a sleek, bevelled body and a muscular hood. However, this year’s upgrade brings a more organic and rounded shape, making the most significant modifications at the front end. The chrome-accented front grille is restyled slightly, along with added projector bean LED headlights. The roofline has also been redesigned for improved aerodynamic performance, while a power tailgate and heated side mirrors are noteworthy throw-ins. One of its most impressive exterior features, however, can be found in the 250-pound weight reduction due to a restructured body with high-strength steel – making it lighter and better suited for handling and manoeuvrability. Overall, the Pilot receives minimal changes but nonetheless stands as an elegant and surprisingly sculpted crossover SUV.

The Pilot’s interior, however, receives the most changes which ultimately characterize the vehicle as incredibly versatile. The biggest overall feature for the Pilot’s interior can be found in the vast spaciousness across three rows of seats, which can be folded down for increased functionality. Storage is likewise improved as well with the addition of multiple bins and cup holders, while max cargo capacity is increased to 83.9 cubic feet. Soft-touch surfaces and higher quality materials further replace hard plastics on the dash and door panels, making the cabin an overall comfortable and upscale environment for relaxed cruising. The center console receives an updated control interface that supports entertainment, communication and navigational functionality. The system can also be linked to Honda’s Satellite-Linked Navigation and Rear Entertainment System. However, intuitive responsiveness is seriously lacking and the system could greatly use a volume knob instead of touch-activated control. Thankfully, the Tri-Zone Climate Control feature is separate from the control interface and has its own space on the console.

Performance wise, the 2016 Honda Pilot offers one 3.5-litre V6 engine, running on a standard four-wheel drive. Paired exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission, this powerful engine produces 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, while delivering a fuel economy of 14.9 litres per 100 kilometres city and 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres highway. Though lacking in fuel-efficiency, this unit offers energetic acceleration and better handling for an athletic driving experience. The Pilot can also be optioned with all-wheel drive and nine-speed automatic transmission.

Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes as well as stability and traction control. Optional features include a rear view camera for parking assistance, blind sport warning, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, forward collision warning and lane-departure warning.

As it stands, the 2016 Honda Pilot is hugely spacious and athletically sleek for a fun driving experience. If you’re looking for a midsize crossover SUV with all the best features inside and out, look no further than the new Pilot.

Power and Performance:

The Pilot's engine is a revamped version of Honda's direct-injected 3.5-liter V-6. It's stronger than the related engine in last year's version: it's up 30 horsepower, to 280 hp, and torque is up 9 pound-feet, to 262 lb-ft. Wound up toward redline, it has a lovely, pure engine note that underscores Honda's reputation as an engine maker first, car company second. We'd put acceleration easily below 7.0 seconds to 60 mph.

Interiors and Special Features:

Honda focused much of its attention to the Pilot's interior, which is more modern, more refined and easier to see out of. There are also more bins and cupholders for your personal items. Up front, a new 8-inch touchscreen interface brings the Pilot up to date in terms of technology features and controls. The screen, standard on all but the base LX, gives the Pilot's dash a clean look, though it's not intuitive or responsive to use as some other touchscreen systems. The rest of the cabin benefits from improved, softer materials and additional acoustic materials that quell noise.

Safety features:

Standard safety features of the 2016 Honda Pilot include antilock brakes, traction and stability control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a rearview camera. The Honda LaneWatch blind-spot camera is standard on the EX, EX-L and Touring, while the Elite gets a blind-spot warning system with rear cross traffic alerts. The Touring and Elite also come with front and rear parking sensors. Available for EX and EX-L and standard on Touring and Elite is the Honda Sensing package that includes forward collision warning, a forward collision mitigation system with automatic braking, road departure intervention, and lane departure warning and intervention systems.
