Full Review

The 2016 Ford Edge is stylish, sturdy and feature-packed – remaining an overall reliable midsize crossover for the modern driver. Though its exterior and interior profiles remain minimally upgraded from last year’s model, the Edge’s biggest highlight is found in the multitude of technological capabilities for the vehicle’s inhabitants. Equally appreciated is the option between three great engines with optimal fuel efficiency for everyday cruising. As it stands, the 2016 Ford Edge is a worthy contender for reliable modern driving.

Inspired by the flowing lines of Ford’s popular Fusion series, the 2016 Edge has, for the most part, kept the same exterior profile from last year’s redesign. A largely imposing trapezoidal grille remains at the front end of the midsize crossover, with crossbars and a beltline crease for a closer alignment with Ford’s overall look and feel. Likewise, its side-body sculpting produces a lighter design and more agile appearance with newer improvements such as a short nose, high hood and slightly more pronounced wheel arches to create a sturdier body. The rear further holds sharp wrap-around trapezoidal lights that smooth out the back end into a cohesive finish.

The interior core of this five-passenger midsize crossover may be outfitted with either cloth or leather upholstery, depending on trim, and is aligned with soft-touch materials for a comfortable feel throughout the vehicle. The new Edge’s black-matte facing centre console also features simplified controls on top of an incredibly convenient reconfigurable gauge cluster behind the steering wheel for maximum user-friendly customizability. Additional interior features include full power accessories, cruise control and telescoping tilt-wheel steering.

In terms of technology, the 2016 Edge boasts a variety of components that will keep you up-to-date and constantly engaged with top-of-the-line devices. While Bluetooth and SYNC communication is standard across the board, higher trims are outfitted with a MyFord Touch infotainment system on an 8-inch display, as well as a hands-free liftgate, heated and cooled seats and rear-seat DVD entertainment. Other available features include a power panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats and voice-activated GPS navigation. Keeping with Ford’s attention to safety, the 2016 Edge also comes with a variety of provisions such as four-wheel anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control, daytime running lights and a post-collision safety system, as well as blind spot monitoring and lane-keeping assistance on higher trims. Overall, this vehicle’s interior upgrades have been stylish and incredibly helpful despite changing minimally from last year.

The 2016 Ford Edge remains offered in four trims, notably the entry-level SE, mid-level SEL, high-end Titanium and a top-shelf Sport. Across these trims (except for Sport) is the standard 2.0-litre Ecoboost inline four-cylinder engine that produces 280 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. This engine is rated at 14.1 litres per 100 kilometres city and 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres highway. Drivers additionally have the option of choosing the 3.5-litre V6 engine with SE, SEL and Titanium models, or a 2.7-litre twin-turbo V6 engine with the Sport model, which delivers 315 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. Regardless of the model and powertrain option, however, all Ford Edges include the choice between front and all-wheel drive while the transmission remains a six-speed automatic across the board.

Overall, the 2016 Ford Edge is an attractive and technologically-loaded midsize crossover with lots to offer in terms of style and comfort. Everyday cruising is a breeze when driving this reliable vehicle.
