Quick Look

The 2016 FIAT 500X is the automaker’s first proper SUV, which means that it may be exactly what FIAT needs to gain more buyers in North America. It’s not the biggest vehicle on the market, but it surpasses FIAT’s previous outings.

Full Review

FIAT has finally decided to design a subcompact crossover that’s large enough to be accepted by North Americans, who tend to prefer bigger vehicles. The 2016 500X is indeed bigger than FIAT’s previous offerings, but it’s still a compact at heart. That said, we think that this new lineup has a good chance of impressing our SUV-loving culture, despite the heavy competition.

The 500X has a slightly heavier look to it than the other FIATs, but it does retain their charm. Even the headlights readily exhibit that thanks to their expected circular shaped, which is readily mimicked the vehicle’s fog lights. The grille doesn’t look all that different either, retaining the thin and rectangular shape of the other FIATs. At the back, the crossover sports the same taillight shape as usual – a rectangle. If there is one way to describe the FIAT 500X’s exterior look, it would be a “teddy bear,” because it’s just as plush and adorable.

The vehicle’s interior design is a far cry from its exterior, however. The two don’t seem to gel at all. However, the cabin still looks stylish and spacious. The interior includes an average-sized LCD screen for the purpose of infotainment and camera displays. There are aspects where interior design does somewhat match the exterior shape. For instance, the seats have a peculiarly round build to them, resembling the overall shape of the car – but that’s all you get as far as similarities are concerned.

Under the hood, the 500X offers a choice of two powertrains. The first one is a 1.4-litre turbo four, which produces 160 horsepower. The restriction FIAT is putting on this trim is that the transmission will only be a six-speed manual. The other engine on offer is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder, which can produce 180 horsepower. Just like the first option, the transmission options limited since all you can get is a nine-speed automatic. While it may seem advanced, it tends to be very abrupt when changing gears and takes far too long to downshift. In terms of fuel efficiency, the 1.4-litre version is rated at 11 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and about 8 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. Drivers will be saving a lot of money with such efficient engines.

This new FIAT model is definitely a worthy addition to the already impressive selection of subcompact crossovers. Despite its mediocre looks, both outside and inside, the 2016 FIAT 500X is still worth the money – all thanks to its fuel-efficient engines.

Power and Performance:

The chassis is shared with the Renegade and the drivetrains are familiar FCA hardware, leaving only the tweaking, tuning, and equipping to distinguish the 500X. The base model uses the familiar Pop trim designation and is powered by the 160-hp 1.4-liter Multiair turbo four that serves in the Fiat 500 Abarth, mated to a standard six-speed manual gearbox. The Pop is the only 500X offering a clutch pedal, and it has no options beyond your choice of colors; the nine-speed automatic and 2.4-liter four-cylinder that come standard on all other trim levels are also optional on the Pop. Like VW with its Golf SportWagen, Fiat equates self-shifting with a hair-shirt approach to motoring—if you want to row your own, you obviously wouldn’t want, say, a bigger touch screen or a heated steering wheel. The marketers say the take rate on manuals is only 1 to 3 percent, but that’s a self-fulfilling prophecy with packaging like this. If you can’t get navigation or heated seats or a backup camera or upgraded audio with a stick shift that will pretty effectively kill sales of the stick shift. We wish Fiat had mirrored Mini’s path in this instance; the Countrymancan be had with a manual even when optioned to the max.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Fiat 500X clearly fits in the latter group. Even though it shares an architecture with the bulldog-cute Jeep Renegade, the 500X dons a different roofline and some throwback Fiat heritage cues into its petite package. The front end wears the classic Fiat mustache-and-badge face, stacked pairs of lamps on each side of the grillework, and a clamshell hood.

Down the side, though, the 500X is drawn along the exact lines of Audi's smaller SUVs, no bad example to borrow. Its roof pulls up over passengers' heads in a gentle arc, and the sides are pared of any non-essential details. All the weird transitions and disruptions of the somewhat related 500L hatchback are dissolved into a neat, tidy, organically drawn shape that's more mature than either of the other Fiats--and the Jeep.

Safety features:

The Fiat 500X is one of a new class of small crossover SUVs. It's perhaps the first Fiat that won't be hampered by its size in the U.S. market, even though its dimensions are truly petite when you consider the vehicles that dominate the SUV class--everything from Jeep Grand Cherokees to Cadillac Escalades.

The 500X rests on a wheelbase 101.2 inches long, with an overall length of about 168 inches depending on the model. That makes it some five inches shorter than the Fiat 500L hatchback, but it's not at a huge loss for interior space. The 500X is also about an inch wider than the 500L, and it's wider than other vehicles in its class, like the Chevy Trax.
