Quick Look

The 2016 BMW Z4 is impeccably styled on the exterior front, with beautifully bold lines and accent creases adorning the outer body with finesse and polish. Though the exterior carries over relatively unchanged, its most notable modification can be found in the hard top which not only creates a quieter cabin but also makes the roadster feel coupe-like with the top up. The interior, on the other hand, is lush with high-quality materials and available leather, and further features numerous technical components for increased driver engagement and assistance. Moreover, the high-end sDrive35is features a powerful and fairly fuel-efficient 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-6 engine that produces 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. Clearly evidenced throughout the roadster is a delicate balance between sport finesse and luxury comfort, and both aspects are executed remarkably well in the 2016 BMW Z4.

Full Review

The 2016 BMW Z4 boasts a dynamic personality and luxurious accommodations for a brilliant balance between a sports car and luxury cruiser. This roadster is reasonably priced and features tons of interior features that are designed to aid and engage your luxury cruising with technology and comfort. Moreover, its exterior profile is impeccably built to turn heads and capture attention, integrating classic bold lines and accent creases for an overall beautiful convertible. The engine lineup is also surprisingly athletic and fuel-efficient. Overall, this vehicle is perfect for those looking to display performance and affluence in one good-looking ride.

The 2016 BMW Z4 carries over relatively unchanged from the outgoing model but still includes some modifications in this upgrade. The outer body holds style and finesse as its biggest highlights, featuring the same sharp lines and accent creases for a vehicle that is undoubtedly sleek and polished. Classic features such as the long hood, short trunk, muscular fenders and the signature BMW kidney grille stay unaltered throughout the exterior profile. However, some features vary across trims in terms of badges, noses, exhaust tips and most notably – the chrome grille on six-cylinder models. One major modification can be found in the integrated hard top (rather than the industry trending soft top) which likewise aids in creating a quiet cabin for an overall relaxed driving experience.

On the inside, you’ll find a surprisingly spacious front cabin for a convertible that typically feels too tight and constrained. This years update adds great room overall for legs, elbows and shoulders, and limitless headroom when the top is down. Evidenced throughout the cabin is a great attention to detail, with upscale materials lining the interior and leather available on higher trims. There’s also a nifty storage compartment behind the seats that is big enough for small to medium sized items, and can pass through to the trunk for longer items.

New in 2016 are standard sport seats across all trims, which are incredibly comfortable and offer great lateral support. Rain sensing wipers, Bluetooth connectivity, automatic climate control and adaptive xenon headlights are also standard on the new Z4. Optional features include adaptive suspension and a thick-rimmed steering wheel, as well as various components in the Technology Package such as iPhone integration, Google Local Search and navigation with real-time traffic information.

In terms of performance, the new BMW highlights three incredibly capable and surprisingly fuel-efficient engines across three trims, each running on rear-wheel drive and boasting handling and manoeuvrability for optimal cruising. The base model sDrive28i receives a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Running on six-speed manual transmission, this unit is rated at 12.8 litres per 100 kilometres city and 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres highway. The most power engine can be found on the high-end sDrive35is, featuring a 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six that produces 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. This unit exclusively offers a seven-speed double-clutch automatic transmission and is rated at 16.6 litres per 100 kilometres city and 11.8 litres per 100 kilometres highway.

Standard safety features include embedded emergency services with automatic collision notifications, as well as BMW’s Ultimate Service which offers complementary roadside assistance for four years/unlimited kilometers and schedule maintenance for four years. There are also adaptive break lights that grow larger and brighter as brake forces increase.

As it stands, the 2016 BMW Z4 is a stunningly attractive roadster that boasts all the comforts of a luxury cruiser with the performance of a sports vehicle. For a reasonably priced convertible with all the bells and whistles on the inside and out, the Z4 is one of the best.

Power and Performance:

The base engine in the 2016 BMW Z4 sDrive28i is the 240-horsepower 4-cylinder engine you've likely seen us gushing over in other BMW models. The step up is the Z4 sDrive35i and its 3.0-liter 6-cylinder, another gem that puts out 300 horsepower. Then there's the Z4 sDrive35is which has a 335-horsepower version of that 6-cylinder. All three engines combine BMW's TwinPower turbo technology and direct injection for immediate and gratifying throttle response. Transmission choices are between a 6-speed manual and an 8-speed automatic; a 7-speed double-clutch automatic is the only option in the top-end sDrive35is model. All Z4s are rear-wheel drive and use premium fuel.

Interiors and Special Features:

The interior is clean and driver-focused, with a simple two-gauge instrument panel and high-quality wood and chrome trim. There's plenty of room for the driver and passenger up front, while the trunk has enough space to hold two sets of golf clubs with the hardtop raised (there's significantly less cargo volume with the roof lowered). Disappearing in just 19 seconds, the Z4's hardtop roof promises better temperature and noise insulation than its canvas predecessor. It also boasts increased visibility and looks quite similar to a coupe when up.

Safety features:

Safety comes in the form of six airbags, embedded emergency services with automatic collision notification, and BMW's clever adaptive brake lights, which emit a larger, brighter light as brake forces increase. Every 2016 Z4 includes BMW Ultimate Service, which consists of complimentary roadside assistance for four years/unlimited miles and scheduled maintenance for four years/50,000 miles.
