Quick Look

The 2016 BMW M models are solely designed for performance-oriented drivers looking for a bit more power and acceleration in their luxury vehicle. Amidst this class is huge emphasis on style and acceleration, effectively making these models some of the best luxury vehicles and top rated sports cars. Underlining these defining elements is a core executive influence, boasting business sophistication and elegance. Look no further than the 2016 M series for the ultimate luxury experience.

Full Review

The 2016 BMW M6 is available as a Coupe (two doors), Gran Coupe (four doors) and Cabriolet (soft-top) and each are all-around impeccably designed in terms of aesthetics, performance and technological capability. The exterior profile takes on a sleek and sophisticated look that ultimately means business, and the interior is built to mirror these influences for an overall comfortable and engaged experience. Performance is likewise exceptional, as the M6 includes a powerful V8 engine unit under the hood that delivers 552 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. Overall, the BMW M Series is built to blend performance and luxury, and both of these elements are remarkably executed within M6 models.

Across trims is an athletic profile designed for the business executive, featuring the quintessential long hood and striking crease that runs the length of the car – qualities that the M Series is so notable for. Newer adjustments have been made, however, like the integration of subtle aerodynamic elements and full LED illumination for increased visibility. Lower front air intakes adorn the front end while a unique rear diffuser rounds out the tail end with cohesion and poise. Altogether, these elements combine to emphasize a more aggressive demeanour for the luxury vehicle.

On the inside is a lush, incredibly comfortable cabin even in typically tight-fitting Cabriolet models, though only in the front seats. Backseats, of course, are a little more restricted in the coupe and convertible. Across trims, the interior features Nappa leather upholstery and genuine wood trim for an exquisite fit and upscale finish. There are also wood or carbon fibre accents displayed throughout the cabin. 2016 models are likewise upgraded with a new steering wheel with various functionalities embedded in buttons, as well as ventilated front seats and heads-up display. This cabin feels familiar, but is nonetheless refreshed with some new elements for added comfort.

Equally important is a new touch-sensitive iDrive controller attached to the 10.2-inch display in the center stack. The system bundles tons of convenient features like infotainment, navigation, Bluetooth, satellite radio and a high-end audio system. The audio system is supplied by Bang & Olufsen and projects 1,200 watts of sound from 16 speakers, providing an extremely enjoyable and modern vehicle to drive. There’s also a rear view camera for maximum visibility and protection.

Under the hood of the rear-wheel drive M6 is an intensely powerful twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 that delivers 552 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. But you can opt for the Competition package that raises output to 600 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. This unit is paired with seven-speed automated manual transmission with shift paddles, or a traditional six-speed manual is available as a no-cost option. Fuel economy is not particularly emphasized in this lineup, with the coupe and convertible offering 20.2 litres per 100 kilometers city and 14.1 litres per 100 kilometers highway with the automatic engine. However most luxury drivers do not choose the M6 with fuel-efficiency in mind anyway.

Standard safety features for all 2016 BMW M6 models include antilock brakes, traction and stability control and a rear view camera. The optional Driver Assistance Plus package includes a lane-departure warning system, active blind spot monitoring and a surround-view camera system. Also optional is an infrared night vision system with pedestrian detection.

All things considered, the 2016 BMW M6 displays elegance and sophistication throughout exterior and interior profiles, complemented by an amazingly performance-oriented engine unit. This vehicle clearly aims to strike the perfect balance between power and luxury.

Power and Performance:

Powering the rear-wheel-drive 2016 BMW M6 is a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that produces an awe-inspiring 552 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque. Opting for the Competition package raises output to 600 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed automated manual transmission with shift paddles is standard and a traditional six-speed manual is available as a no-cost option. An automatic (but thankfully defeatable) stop-start engine function to conserve fuel at rest is also included.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2016 BMW 6 Series interior gets a mild upgrade this year, with a new steering wheel the most obvious change, and a new touch-sensitive iDrive controller also prominent. However, for the most part it's familiar, and that's fine with us. With premium materials everywhere, exquisite fit and finish, wood or carbon-fiber accents, a high-end audio system and supremely comfortable driver's seat, the 2016 6 Series leaves a lasting impression. Not surprisingly, rear-seat room is tight in the coupe and convertible, but acceptable on Gran Coupes. Trunk space is largely unaffected when the convertible's top is folded.

Safety features:

Standard safety features for all 2016 BMW M6 models include antilock disc brakes with advanced standby and drying features, traction and stability control, a hill-holder feature, front-seat side airbags, active front-seat head restraints and a rearview camera. Convertibles receive added rollover protection. The optional Driver Assistance Plus package includes a lane-departure warning system, an active blind-spot monitor and a surround-view camera system. Also optional is an infrared night vision system with pedestrian detection.
