Quick Look

Acura is bringing back the TLX for another year and it is coming in hot! They have made very strategic changes to this new model which is anticipated to catch more driver’s eyes.

Full Review

The new 2016 Acura TLX looks like it is going to be a great model for another consecutive year. Acura has been so successful with this model in the past and they seem to want more since they clearly are throwing a lot of money into it. The changes with the new 2016 model are all visible on the exterior and interior designs, and the powertrain under the hood. With Honda also improving their looks on their new models, they need to make sure they have Acura at a higher position than them since Acura is their “high-end” cars of their company.

The exterior design on the car look very sleek and handsome. Starting off with the grille, we can see it has a very friendly look since it almost seems as if it is smiling back at everyone with it curved downwards. The grille is also complemented by the luxurious Acura logo on the centre of it, placed on a silver bar. Moving to the sides of the grille, we can see the headlights are very similar to the previous year’s design, with a thin look and LED lighting. We also see this design in one of Honda’s newest models, the Accord. This may not be a smart move by Honda as the two vehicles have a pretty large price gap and are now looking pretty similar. Moving on to the rear view of the sedan, we can see they keep the thin-looking lights consistent as the tail lights are also as thin as the headlights. Other than that, the rear has gone through a bit of an alteration to its shape which makes it a bit more appealing.

As we take a look at the interior designing, we can see Acura has done a great job with making sure to keep the theme of the car consistent, by also making the interior designs look very friendly and appealing. This is evident with their very organized-looking centre console. Instead of it look messy and all over the place, they have made sure to make it look clean and sharp. The infotainment system doesn’t seem too complicated to use as it all is placed in an organized manner. The infotainment system is complemented with another screen, similar to the Accord concept, which will be used for navigation controls. The material used on the dashboard and seats are also very presentable and comfortable. In terms of space, they have done an excellent job of maintaining the ample room they leave for both drivers and passengers.

Under the hood, we can see Acura uses a 2.4-litre I4 DOHC i-VTEC engine which will be able to produce 205 horsepower and a 3.5-litre V6 engine which will be able to produce 290 horsepower. The 4-cylinder engine will be run on an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the V6 engine will use a 9-speed automatic ZF transmission. The engines will be available in either forward-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. In terms of fuel efficiency, the 2016 Acura TLX will be able to drive about 8.4 litres for every 100 kilometres driven for the I4 engine, while the V6 engine will allow the vehicle to drive 100 kilometres with about 9.4 litres.

The new TLX will be a great car for a lot of drivers out there as it is dominant over its competitors in many aspects. Other than the fact that they are now allowing the Honda models to look like the Acura models, the new TLX looks really good and will be a real eye-catcher for many on the road.

Power and Performance:

The 2016 Acura TLX comes with three different powertrains, each with a mix of qualities that will suit it to slightly different audiences. The base model has a four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive, and it can be updated to a V-6. The top of the line is a V-6 with all-wheel drive.

Enthusiasts may find the base model the best one, though it lacks the premium features and four driven wheels of the top version. But it's arguably the best balanced version, it's easy to toss around corners with confidence, and it remains sufficiently comfortable to impress your in-laws and do double duty as sober business transport.

Interiors and Special Features:

Is the 2016 Acura TLX a beautiful car? Most shoppers probably wouldn't think so--but they'd likely agree on handsome. It has a toned-down version of the Acura shield-shaped grille, with a vaguely beak-like chrome bar flanked by a pair of narrow, wide multi-element headlights. Running lights set low in the bumper and air intakes below those add depth and presence.

The side profile is arched and aggressive, almost heading toward coupe territory--if it weren’t for that long, roomy center roof section. Flared rear fenders are accented by character lines, hinting at sporty potential. Simple curves at the rear partly conceal a lip spoiler at the end of the trunk lid, while twin tailpipes at the bottom of the bumper fascia are carefully inset and deliberately inconspicuous. Unusually for sedans, many will feel its best view is from the rear three-quarter angle.

Safety features:

The Acura TLX had all but perfect safety ratings for 2015 when it was new, but crash-test data for 2016 drops its scores. Last year it earned the coveted Top Safety Pick+ award from the notoriously picky Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The IIHS gave the TLX its top rating of 'Good' in all tests except the tough new Small-Overlap Frontal Crash test, where it scored one notch lower, with an 'Acceptable' grade. This year that Acceptable is down to a Marginal, which costs the TLX its award.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it the top rating of five stars both overall and in every single category of test. You can't do better than that.
