Quick Look

The new 2016 Acura RDX is back with several changes to the technology, a bit more power and a subtle new look. This was a fantastic vehicle to begin with, but now Acura has figured out a way to make it even better.

Full Review

Acura has released their newest addition to the RDX family, and it looks great with alterations all over the place. With this luxury compact crossover being Acura’s second-best seller, it was hard to believe they made one of the best even better! Even though some changes done by Acura aren’t big, they are significant enough to generate a lot of buzz throughout the automotive industry. You can’t really blame Acura for not making too many alterations because there isn’t much to change. The RDX has everything a driver could ask for in a luxury crossover and more.

The 2016 Acura RDX’s front bumper is a bit pointier than before, causing the entire shape of the crossover to “lean” towards that point. Since the point is right under the logo, in a way, it is helping to draw more attention towards it, even though it’s technically the focal point of Acura every vehicle. With the logo being an almost triangular object, this new design really complements the overall theme of the brand. The theme is also evident within the vehicle’s pentagonal grille and LED headlights, both of which have that arrow-like look. At the rear, you might notice slight modifications to the vehicle’s exhaust pipes, but they are so insignificant that they hardly matter. The spoiler is still there, featuring a set of wider taillights, which make the rear side of the car seem rounder.

The interior of the new Acura RDX also doesn’t have many changes. One minor change is the reworked two-tone colour scheme, with the black coming farther down the dash and high contrast grey brightening things up where necessary. Also, the front two seats now come standard with heated seats and the second row gets its own air-conditioning vents. There are many other features that Acura has installed in this model, including rear cross traffic alert, blind spot information, HD radio, an eight-way adjustable power driver’s seat, a dual screen, rain sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors and ventilated front seats. In addition to all the features, Acura has also done a great job of keeping the vehicle very space-efficient. In fact, it’s hard to believe that the crossover has enough space for adults at the back and the front.

Under the hood, the RDX uses a 3.5-litre V6 engine. Honda engineers have worked on the engine to improve the power and as a result have been able to boost the engine to now push 279 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. The engine is connected to a six-speed transmission, which directs the power to either the front wheels or all of them. In terms of fuel efficiency, the vehicle is rated at 11.8 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 8.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway, with the front-wheel-drive option. With all-wheel drive, the number are a bit higher – at 12.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 8.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway.

The 2016 Acura RDX clearly has it all. It’s definitely high up there with other luxury SUVs when it comes to exterior and interior looks, power and fuel efficiency. Acura has done a great job of upgrading only what needed to be upgraded, with nothing that feels unnecessary.

Power and Performance:

The RDX bucks convention by sticking with a large and powerful 3.5-liter V-6 engine, while other luxury crossovers move to turbocharged fours--an approach tried for the first-generation RDX, which may just have been ahead of its time. The 2016 version of the engine gets Variable Cylinder Management, with rated outputs of 279 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque--increases of 6 hp and 1 lb-ft respectively over the last year's RDX engine. The only available transmission is a conventional six-speed automatic.

Despite the extra power, projected fuel economy ratings rise 1 mpg to 20 mpg city, 29 mpg highway for the base model, or 19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway if the optional all-wheel drive is specified.

Interiors and Special Features:

The interior of the RDX is comfortable, well-laid-out, and remarkably space-efficient. The underpinnings are shared with the Honda CR-V, so that vehicle's low cargo floor and thoughtful front and rear seats make the RDX surprisingly versatile as family transport despite its much more stylish lines. The seats are better than those of the CR-V, and front-seat space is ample even for passengers over six feet tall. A driver's seat that's power adjustable in eight different ways, along with the tilting and telescoping steering column, make the driver's position adjustable enough to handle almost any body type and size. The cabin is well-insulated, and both front and rear passengers will find the car quiet under almost all circumstances. The cargo bay behind the rear seats provides 26.1 cubic feet of space, while folding the rear seats flat boosts that to 61.3 cubic feet. Under-floor storage adds another 15 cubic feet, giving an overall cargo volume of 76.9 cubic feet.

Safety features:

A batch of new collision-avoidance technologies is grouped into a package called AcuraWatch. That includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Commendably, the AcuraWatch features can be had on any trim level, although they’re standard with the new, top-spec Advance package. Should all the electronic nannies somehow fail to keep you out of trouble, Acura claims that the 2016 RDX also has improved crash-test performance.
