Quick Look

The 2015 Volkswagen Golf serves up a revamped body, new engine and even more features than ever before. The highlight of this hatchback is, of course, the replacement of the weaker 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine with a 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 170 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque.

Full Review

Like its predecessors, the 2015 Volkswagen Golf manages to prove why exactly it’s one of the best hatchbacks on the market – and why it’s still around after 40 years and seven generations. Its evolution has been subtle – as is the case with most German cars – but if you compare the modern Golf to the earlier models, the differences will be quite clear. The new version offers revamped exterior, improved engine and new interior features, all of which add up to one of the finest iterations of the vehicle to date.

On the outside, the new Volkswagen Golf is unfortunately nowhere near as outstanding as it is under the hood, despite enjoying a solid redesign. The Golf has never really been much of a risk taker in the department anyway. Overall, the 2015 Golf does seem leaner and tighter in terms of design, serving up sharper character lines and more focused headlights. Volkswagen hasn’t tinkered much with the proven formula, but it’s hard to deny the fact that the Golf is indeed a handsome beaut. However, the hatchback derives much of its success not from its looks, but its practicality. The new model is 2.1 inches longer and +0.5 inches wider, which as far as we are concerned never hurts!

Inside, the 2015 Golf offers well-grained, soft-touch materials, complemented by a somewhat grim yet comfortable and sporty design The latter is a result of bold red stitching that’s almost impossible to ignore. All the buttons and switches are located right next to the driver, which makes controlling all the functions easy to learn. The vehicle comes with a 5.8-inch touchscreen, which is a bit small when compared to others, but it works well enough, while being very easy to read – at least at a glance. The large iPhone connector plug is a bit sluggish, requiring you to remove the phone’s case, which is quite a bit of a pain, given the ubiquity of USB ports. The navigation system is a disappointment as well since it doesn’t overlay traffic information on the map and instead lists nearby traffic incidents.

The front seats in the Golf offer plenty of support and comfort, even if you decide to do some long-distance travelling. The rear-seat passengers don’t suffer as a result of this either, getting ample leg- and shoulder room – though due to low-mounted rear-seat cushions, they are probably better suited for smaller people. Behind rear seats, you can find a 22.8-cubic-foot cargo area, which can expand to a class-leading 52.7 cubic feet of space

Under the hood, the Golf has a turbocharged 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that generates 170 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. If you get the Launch Edition trim, this engine will be connected to a five-speed manual transmission, but in the case of the Golf S trim, you get a six-speed automatic transmission. The SE and SEL trims get the automatic transmission only.

The other available engine is the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder available in the diesel-powered TDI models. It produces 150 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. In the case of this powertrain, a six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a six-speed automated manual transmission is optional.

No matter how you look at it, the 2015 Volkswagen Golf is a superb vehicle in many regards. Yes, its design is a little on the conservative side, but its new engine and solid cabin more than make up for any shortcomings that stem from that. With a price tag of only $18,995, the Golf is definitely worth checking out.

Power and Performance:

Powering the conventional gasoline 2015 VW Golf models is a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. The Launch Edition trim is only available with a five-speed manual transmission, while the Golf S trim can be optioned with a six-speed automatic. The SE and SEL trims are only offered with the automatic.

The EPA estimates for this engine are 29 mpg combined (25 city/36 highway) with the automatic and 30 mpg combined with the manual. On our mixed driving evaluation loop, we managed to achieve an impressive 32 mpg from a loaded Golf SEL with the automatic.

Interiors and Special Features:

Cabin quality has long been a Golf strength, and the latest model raises the bar even higher inside. The design is simple yet mature, with abundant soft-touch plastics and ritzy aluminum-look or piano black trim. The center stack, which is thoughtfully canted towards the driver, houses intuitive HVAC controls and a 5.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that's slightly undersized yet easy to operate.

Passenger space is ample up front, and there's room for medium-sized adults to abide in relative comfort in back. However, we found the front seats in lower-trim models to be nearly as flat as the bench in grandpa's Grand Marquis, and without the corresponding sofa-like softness. The SEL's leather thrones were significantly more accommodating. The only other significant blemish in the excellent interior is the head-scratching lack of USB ports.

Safety features:

Standard safety features for the 2015 VW Golf include antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. A post-crash braking system is also standard and automatically applies the brakes after an impact to reduce the likelihood of a secondary crash. Forward collision warning and front and rear parking sensors are optional.

On Golf S models and above, VW's Car-Net emergency telematics is standard with features that include automatic crash notification, roadside assistance, remote vehicle access, stolen vehicle location and geo-fencing (which allows parents to set boundaries for teenage drivers). A Car-Net smartphone app lets owners control many of these functions on the go.
