Quick Look

The 2015 Volkswagen Eos is the sort of convertible that can be both a summer getaway vehicle and an all-purpose coupe, depending on the owner’s desires. It benefits greatly from its retractable hardtop roof and a perky turbocharged engine. However, those looking for a car with proper rear seats will be disappointed by how tight they are in this vehicle.

Full Review

The 2015 Volkswagen Eos is a four-seat convertible that somehow manages to be both luxurious and practical. In the summer, it will satisfy your craving for wind your face at high speeds, while during cold winters, it will transform in to a warm and cozy coupe. All of this can be achieved thanks to Eos’ retractable hardtop roof with glass panel sunroof built into it. But there’s more – it offers a nice turbocharged engine and, unlike most convertibles – back seats.

If you decide to view the 2015 Eos from the side, you can easily mistake it for a hardtop coupe. However, its cut-lines do give away its true identity. You’ll also find that this beaut carries a set of LED taillights, while offering a selection of rich body colours. The car exhibits its premium feel through its integrated side-mirror turn signals, chrome dual exhaust outlets and large black-glass sunroof, which is integrated with the three-piece retractable hardtop. Overall, this model looks exactly as the last year’s offering, so don’t expect anything new here.

On the inside, the Volkswagen Eos offers the sort of intelligent design that can only be found in higher-priced vehicles. If you go for the Executive trim, you’ll get premium leather seating and 12-way power-adjustable front seats, along with four-way power-adjustable lumbar. The result is a set of seats that are so comfortable that don’t seem to belong in a car in this price range. But that’s not all – the touchscreen audio head unit here is one of the most intuitive ones currently available, especially in this segment. The one issue that plagues the cabin is the fact that the rear seats are exceptionally narrow, which makes them useless to grown adults. As for the trunk space – with the top in place, the Eos can only yield 10.5 cubic feet of room. Once you retract the top, the amount of space gets reduced to 6.6 cubic feet.

Under the hood, the 2015 Eos still has the same 2.0-liter turbocharged engine as last year, which produces 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. Combined with a DSG transmission, it’s without a doubt one of the most respectable powertrains on the road. The DSG transmission works as a no-touch automatic in traffic, but you can turn it into a quick-shifting, no-pedal manual if you want to try something a little more interesting.

In general, the 2015 Volkswagen Eos is a fine car that can be just a little more than a typical convertible, if you want it to be. However, don’t expect it to replace a sedan. At the very least, it’s a coupe – so if you’re looking for that, then you should definitely check out the Eos.

Power and Performance:

The 2015 Volkswagen Eos' 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and DSG transmission comprise one of the most highly regarded powertrains on the road. With FSI direct fuel injection mitigating turbo lag, the engine is unusually responsive. The innovative DSG transmission functions as a no-touch automatic in traffic and a quick-shifting, no-pedal manual when you're feeling more enthusiastic.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2015 Volkswagen Eos' interior is more intelligently designed and better assembled than cars we've driven costing twice as much. The Executive trim's premium leather seating and 12-way power-adjustable front seats (including 4-way power-adjustable lumbar) are supremely comfortable, and the touch-screen audio head unit is among the most intuitive we've tested. As it has to accommodate much of the retractable top's mechanicals, the Eos' rear seat is understandably narrow and not much use for grown adults. With the top in place, the Eos offers a modest 10.5 cubic feet of trunk space, but once the top is retracted space shrinks to just 6.6 cubic feet.

Safety features:

The 2015 Volkswagen Eos comes with a whole host of safety features, though some will vary depending on your chosen trim level. The standard features include two frontal airbags and one side body airbag as well as ABS braking, traction control, rollover protection bars, tire pressure monitor and stability control. Other features are electronic stability control, ABS and driveline traction control, side impact beams, dual stage driver and passenger seat-mounted side airbags, Car-Net Emergency S.O.S., low tire pressure warning, dual stage drive and passenger front airbags, driver and passenger side airbag head extension and outboard front lap and shoulder safety belts.

Last year’s has earned top “good” ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, so it is expected that this model will do the same.
