Quick Look

The Toyota Prius is pretty much synonymous with the term “hybrid.” While it isn’t the only hybrid option available, it was definitely a pioneer for this type drivetrain. Although the hybrid segment now has many more options, the Prius still remains a great choice.

Full Review

The Toyota Prius is the best-selling hybrid vehicle and has been the vehicle to pave the way for hybrids everywhere. Many new hybrid options have come about, but the Prius still manages to hold up as far as fuel economy and interior space go. There are some shortcomings, like its slightly underwhelming design, but if its function over form you are after, then the Prius is a great economical option.

The Prius was first introduced to the world in 2000 and is currently in the third generation after a refresh in 2009. The Prius is available in five different trim levels: Two, Three, Persona Series, Four and Five. When it comes to the economical buyer that is solely focused on the hybrid component over any other, then the Prius remains a go-to option.

The Toyota Prius is one of the most distinct cars on the road. There may be some imitators, but nothing can replicate the design that allows the Prius to achieve such great mileage. Designers have shaped the Prius to be aerodynamic and wind-defying. While it may not be the sleekest-looking vehicle on the market, it definitely isn’t the worst. There is a reverse hump on the roof that helps increase interior space, while also adding some defining features. While the Prius is no longer the most aerodynamic car on the market, it is definitely up there with the best of them. The base Prius comes with 15-inch alloy wheels and heated power mirrors. Moving up in trim will add slightly different options. There is also a Plus Appearance package, which adds 17-inch wheels and an aerodynamic body kit.

The function-over-form theme continues into the cabin of the Prius, where drivers are greeted with simple layout. The console has straightforward controls that are jutted out towards the driver for easy access. The dash is stylish yet functional, and allows for lots of storage room. There are nooks and crannies for storage to be found all over this vehicle. The design is on the basic side, so some added colour would be a nice touch, but simplicity is the key on this vehicle. The materials used in the Prius are a bit disappointing as hard plastics make up the majority of the surfaces. The cabin space is pretty good, however. The cargo space is large thanks to the hatchback style and the rear headroom is good thanks to the hump in the roof. Standard interior features in the base Prius include keyless entry and ignition, a height-adjustable driver seat, cruise control and automatic climate control.

The technology features in the Prius range from basic to quite good, depending on the trim level or package option. The base Two comes with an AM/FM/XM/CD player, Bluetooth pairing and a 3.1-inch display radio with iPod and USB connectivity. Upgrading the Prius trim will add features like a rearview camera, better audio system, navigation system and Toyota’s Entune infotainment system. The system provides occupants with a suite of applications that preform different technological functions.

The main appeal of the Prius is, of course, the hybrid drivetrain configuration. Every Prius is equipped with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine combined with a pair of electric motors/generators. When combined, they send 134 horsepower to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission. When it comes to fuel economy, the 2015 Prius uses 4.7 litres per 100 kilometres.

Overall, the 2015 Toyota Prius is still a great option as far as hybrid vehicles go. While there is definitely a growing number of options out there, the Prius remains one the most economical offerings around. So, if that’s your goal, then don’t overlook the Prius.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2015 Toyota Prius features straightforward controls that jut out toward the driver in a "floating console" that provides a storage tray underneath. It's stylish and also helps maximize cabin space. The digital instrument panel features a floating layer that displays audio, temperature and trip computer information when the driver touches those controls on the steering wheel, minimizing eye movement. Some drivers might find the overall design a bit cluttered, however. Potentially more irksome though, is the lack of useful range provided by the telescoping steering wheel, which doesn't extend far enough to reach some drivers.

Safety features:

Every 2015 Toyota Prius comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. A rearview camera is also standard.

Optional on the Prius Four and Five is Toyota's Safety Connect emergency communications system, which includes emergency and roadside assistance, collision notification and stolen-vehicle location. The Prius Five is also eligible for the Advanced Technology package, which includes a frontal-collision warning system and a lane-departure warning system.
