Quick Look

The 2015 Toyota Avalon is a solid sedan that focuses on comfort, space and efficiency above all else. Its base 3.5-litre V6 engine boasts fuel economy numbers of 13.5 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 9.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway, while producing 268 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid powertrain serves up even better ratings – 7.1 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 7.2 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway.

Full Review

The 2015 Toyota Avalon doesn’t want to be edgy or fast – it wants to be comfortable, spacious and satisfying to drive. Its other perks include excellent fuel economy and relatively affordable price of $37,785, both of which are available in spades in the Avalon sedan. But that’s not all – there are also the hybrid version of the Avalon, which improves those efficiency numbers, and new Touring Sport Edition, which is meant the draw the more style-savvy buyers. Whichever one you choose, you will feel satisfied – that’s a promise!

On the outside, the 2015 Avalon boasts a masculine stance and finely-chiselled bodywork, which Toyota meticulously conceived at its Southern California-based Calty Design studio. Other notable design features include the sedan’s forward-leaning C-pillar and sweeping roofline, which allow it to look like a coupe. While in most cases this design isn’t overly practical, in this case, it actually improves rear-seat headroom. At the front, the vehicle offers headlights with stylish square projector lenses called Quadrabeams. Add to that either 17-inch or available 18-inch alloy wheels, LED taillights and dual chrome-tipped exhaust outlets and you get a very modern-looking vehicle.

Inside, the 2015 Avalon has one of the finest cabins in its class, offering top-notch materials, user-friendly controls and terrific fit and finish. Regardless of the trim you pick, the design is superb, which is made even better by the vehicle’s $37,785 starting price. Toyota is also very generous in terms of features this year, with infotainment options like advanced voice recognition, mobile application integration and even hard-drive-based navigation all being available for the more tech-savvy car buyers. The best part about all the technology is that it’s very responsive and straightforward since all the touch switches for audio and climate-control functions do exactly what they are supposed to do. As for comfort, your rear-seat passengers will get to enjoy plenty of legroom and headroom, in spite of the vehicle’s coupe-like design. Behind the rear seats is a 16-cubic-foot trunk with a flat floor and wide opening, which can fit plenty of stuff if required. The hybrid version has 14 cubic feet of space, which is a bit less, but still not bad.

Under the hood, the new Toyota Avalon gets a 3.5-litre V6 engine that produces 268 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. It’s connected to a six-speed automatic transmission, while directing power to the front wheels only. The hybrid version comes with a new Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder powerplant, which is also used in the Camry Hybrid. It produces 200 horsepower overall, with the regular engine delivering 156 pound-feet of torque and battery giving 199 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain is connected to a gearless continuously variable transmission. As is the case with the gasoline engine, there is no optional all-wheel-drive system, which is a shame. The fuel efficiency numbers here are 7.1 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 7.2 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway.

Overall, there’s little bad that can be said about the 2015 Toyota Avalon. It’s spacious, slick and efficient. So, if you’re in the market for a relatively affordable yet upscale sedan, then this is worth checking out.

Power and Performance:

New for 2013, the Avalon brought with it a pair of powertrains, with a Hybrid available for the first time on Toyota's big sedan. The rest of the driving experience was fully remade then, as well, resulting in an Avalon that goes beyond coddling and is also pleasant to pilot. Compared to the former car, and to many entries in this now very competitive class, it's quicker and more responsive while also feeling very composed and refined.

V-6 models come with Toyota's familiar 3.5-liter V-6, putting out 268 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. The six-speed automatic adopts a sport-shift mode, and incorporates throttle blipping for smoother gear changes. As of 2015, all V-6 models get paddle controls for shifting, as well as Eco, Normal, and Sport driving modes that adjust steering, throttle, and shift feel. The V-6 versions hit 60 in just 6.7 seconds.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2015 Toyota Avalon sedan offers perhaps the finest cabin in its class, with first-rate materials, user-friendly controls and impressive fit and finish. The general design is the same regardless of trim level, which only sweetens the Avalon's attractive $33K starting price. Toyota's latest batch of infotainment options such as advanced voice recognition, mobile application integration and hard-drive-based navigation should appeal to tech-savvy buyers. And, unlike the Ford Taurus, the Avalon's capacitive-touch switches for the audio and climate-control functions are responsive and straightforward. In terms of comfort the rear-seat passengers are treated to an abundance of legroom and headroom.

To all this, the Touring and Limited editions add standard front fog/driving lights, with the Limited tacking on standard high-intensity-discharge (HID) self-leveling headlights, a post-collision safety system and Entune emergency communications services that include stolen vehicle tracking.
