Quick Look

The 2014 Subaru BRZ is four-seat sports coupe that hasn’t changed much since last year, but still offers plenty of juice. Its interior and exterior designs are perfectly harmonized, giving the vehicle that perfect “sporty” feeling. The only issue here is the lack of a more powerful engine option and presence of really useless rear seats, which are simply too cramped to fit in anyone.

Full Review

The 2015 Subaru BRZ is back with retuned suspension, pristine exhaust pipes and updated cabin. This year also marks the introduction of the limited edition “Series Blue” version, which comes with special limited-edition features as well as aero body styling tweaks, red brake calipers, interior accent stitching, black wheels and a black-and-blue interior colour scheme. Aside from all that, the 2015 BRZ is the same straightforward sports coupe that we saw last year – with the same focus on the “fun” aspect of it.

The exterior design of the 2015 BRZ is almost identical to that of the Scion FR-S, which means that the only thing that separates the two is the badge. The new Series Blue does provide a bit of a visual distinction with two unique colours – WR Blue Pearl and Crystal White Pearl. The BRZ’s sportiness comes through its long hood, abbreviated trunk and a stocky, planted stance. The car’s presence is actually much more adorable in real life than in pictures, so don’t be judge this book by its cover!

Inside, the BRZ is all about the driving experience, and not so much about the “being-driven” experience. The BRZ actually has rear seats, but they are there only in case of emergency – if you really need to drive more than one person. There’s no way for anyone to feel comfortable back there. The 2015 Subaru BRZ is a two-seat sports car at its core, so fold those back seats and forget about them. The cockpit is low-slung, but once you get in, you’ll find that there is plenty of room there. Tall drivers will find quite a bit of headroom too, along with very supportive seats for comfortable long drives. When it comes to design and materials, the interior isn't exactly fancy, but it’s good enough, thanks to the superb steering wheel-pedal placement-shifter relationship.

Under the hood, the 2015 BRZ has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, which produces 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque.  The engine's horizontally opposed layout allows the BRZ to have low centre of gravity, which improves the coupe’s handling abilities – since its weight is closer to the ground. The engine sends its power to the rear wheels by using either a standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic transmission. The only thing lacking here is the option to place the standard powertrain with a turbochaged one.

Overall, the 2015 Subaru BRZ is a fantastic option for anyone in search of a great sport coupe. It may not fit too many people, while its powertrain isn’t the best, but it still has plenty to offer to any car enthusiast out there.

Power and Performance:

The 2015 BRZ is rear-wheel drive and features a 2.0-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine that produces 200 hp and 151 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a six-speed automatic with shift paddles and rev-matched downshifts is optional except on the Series.Blue, which is manual transmission only.

In Edmunds performance testing, a manual-equipped BRZ went from zero to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds. The automatic BRZ did it in 7.9 seconds. These times (especially the automatic's) are on the slow side compared with V6-powered rivals that are about a second or so quicker. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 25 mpg combined (22 city/30 highway) with the manual and an excellent 28 combined (25/34) with the automatic.

Interiors and Special Features:

Technically, the BRZ has rear seats, but we feel sorry for anybody who has to spend any length of time there. It's better to just fold them down and use the 2015 Subaru BRZ as a 2-seat sports car. The front seat passengers will find plenty of room once they make their way into the low-slung cockpit. There's good head room even for tall drivers, and the seats are very supportive, but comfortable for longer drives. The interior isn't particularly fancy, but it's good enough, and the all-important steering-wheel/pedal placement/shifter relationship is among the best you'll find.

Safety features:

Standard safety equipment on the 2015 Subaru BRZ includes antilock brakes, traction and stability control (with selectable levels of calibration), front side airbags and side curtain airbags.

In Edmunds brake testing, the BRZ came to a stop from 60 mph in 114 feet -- a short distance -- but about what you'd expect from a sporty car with summer tires.

In government crash tests, the BRZ earned an overall rating of five stars (out of a possible five), with four stars for total frontal-impact crash protection and five stars for total side-impact protection. In crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the BRZ received the highest possible rating of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength tests. The BRZ's seat/head restraint design was also rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts.
