Quick Look

The 2015 Scion xB is one of the few squared-off hatchbacks currently available, appealing to the same niche group of buyers as the Nissan CUBE and Honda Element. Though it’s not as popular as the Kia Soul, its cabin and features are worth noting. Sadly, its 2.4-litre four-cylinder isn’t particularly impressive either, producing only 158 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. Despite the flaws, the xB is still worth considering.

Full Review

The Scion xB is one of the first boxy hatchbacks on the market, boasting the same niche appeal as the Nissan CUBE and Honda Element. The 2015 version continues the tradition by delivering charming squared-off looks, decent cabin and plenty of neat features. Its 2.4 litre four-cylinder engine isn’t as nimble or fast as the best of them, but it’s not too bad either. Despite its perks, the xB has been surpassed and outsold by the Kia Soul, so if you are looking for the superior vehicle, that would be it! But let’s not steal the xB’s thunder here and see what it has to offer.

In terms of exterior design, the 2015 xB is low, blocky and wide, which makes it a rather unique-looking vehicle. In fact, it’s so squared-off that even the superior Kia Soul looks curvaceous by comparison. In many ways, it looks exactly like a low-riding wagon, especially if you get aftermarket wheels and wider tires. Its side doors are tall and wide, with blocky windows that more or less resemble the entire vehicle. The C-pillars just behind the darkened back windows endow the vehicle with a very impressive appearance, but from a practical perspective, they create blind spots.

Inside, the Scion xB benefits from its tall roof, which predictably enough allows for plenty of headroom – and rear legroom. So, if you are planning to stick tall passengers into your rear seats, you can rest assured that they will feel comfortable. If you hate people and prefer things, you will be in for quite a treat as well. The rear seats fold flat in a 60/40 split, which in combination with the tall roof allows for 70 cubic feet of cargo space. The overall interior theme is actually rather simple, with all the knobs and switches easy to find and use. Unfortunately, this simplicity goes hand-in-hand with cheap, hard plastics. The centre-mounted gauges are much more inconvenient than their initial impression would let on – so putting them back in front of the driver would be a great improvement.

Under the hood, the Scion xB is as lacking as everywhere else, offering a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 158 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque – same engine since 2007. The xB is only available with a front-wheel-drive system and either a five-speed manual or outdated four-speed automatic transmission. Since its power output is so low, its fuel economy is not bad, but many of its competitors offer much better results.

So, is the Scion xB worth your $19,110? Only if you are really in love with its looks, which we don’t particularly enjoy. Its engine is outdated and cabin is plain, which adds up to a rather unimpressive vehicle overall. Give it a try, if you like what you are seeing. Otherwise, stay away.

Power and Performance:

The 2015 Scion xB is aimed at younger folks in urban environments, but it's not quite the perky runabout you might expect it to be. Instead it offers a grown-up, merely adequate (and unexciting) driving experience, and it's not particularly quick.

All xBs use a 158-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. The same powertrain has been used in a number of Toyota-brand vehicles, including the Camry. It's plenty for that family sedan, yet it somehow manages to make the xB feel a little sluggish.

The base transmission is a five-speed manual gearbox, which we prefer. It has a nicely weighted shift lever and progressive clutch uptake, and lets the driver get the most out of the engine's modest output. The available four-speed automatic has big gaps between its handful of gear ratios, which makes highway driving more noisy and less satisfying.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2015 Scion xB's tall roof means there's plenty of headroom, and the good rear legroom means even tall rear-seat passengers should be comfortable. If instead of people you need to haul things, the rear seats fold flat in a 60/40 split, and the tall roof means there's nearly 70 cubic feet of cargo space. "Simple" is the obvious interior design theme, with knobs and switches easy to find and use. "Cheap" is another word, thanks to the acres of hard, flat plastic. The center-mounted gauges are interesting, but we'd still prefer they were in front of the driver.

Safety features:

All xB models are fitted as standard with dual front, front side and full-length side curtain airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems.
