The 2015 Scion FR-S delivers excellent performance, spacious front seats and absolutely stunning exterior design for a price so low, it almost seems fake. The only hiccup here is the coupe’s somewhat weak 2.0-litre four-cylinder that can produce only 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. However, since the FR-S’ handling is so good, this flaw can be easily overlooked.



Full Review

The 2015 Scion FR-S is most certainly one of the more affordable sports cars on the market, being priced at just $26,450. Its main attribute, however, is its straightforwardness since it targets a very specific type of consumer – the car enthusiast. It’s also incredibly well-put-together since it drives a lot better than many cars that are twice its price.

Exterior design demonstrates old-school proportions that define a typical sports car, yet it’s also incredibly modern – from head to toe. The “classic” features include a long hood and short deck, while the modern features are its keen attention to detail and unabashed curviness. At the front, you’ll find a wide grille along with triangular vents in the lower fascia and flowing lines that merge into the hood and fenders. The fenders themselves are slightly angled, while protruding from the hood line. The overall body shape is incredibly simple with a roof that sweeps up and drops down like a wave.

On the inside, the car is a bit on the minimalist side since there aren’t all too many moving parts or visible functions. That being said, don’t judge the book by its cover, as the saying goes. The materials you can interact with generally seem pleasant to the touch. In terms of space, you get plenty of it at the front, along with bolstering for support. Even if you’re over six feet tall, you should still do fine. One the other hand, if you decide to relocate to the back, you’ll find yourself much more constrained. Knee and leg room is rather restricted – unless you move the front seats as far forward as possible. The cargo area isn’t too big either, though it can accommodate midsize bags, if you need it to.

In terms of features, there aren’t all too many of them, though the standard ones aren’t too bad. Some of the optional additions include a 5.8-inch LCD touchscreen display, carpeted trunk, cabin floor mats and ashtray kit. What you might miss here is navigation, which isn’t available at all – not even as an option. However, you can use the BeSpoke apps to get limited navigation functions, if you so desire. The standard features are manually adjustable six-way driver and four-way passenger front seats, fold-flat back seats, first-aid kit, eight-speaker Pioneer audio system and leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Under the hood, the 2015 FR-S comes with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, which can produce 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. You can connect it to either a six-speed manual or paddle-shifted six-speed automatic. None of the numbers here are all too impressive, which makes the engine somewhat weak. However, this car isn’t about power – it’s about handling. This FR-S is so smooth and agile that it’s hard to believe that it costs below $30,000. Sure, Scion has cut a few corners when it came to power, but otherwise we’re not really sure how they pulled it off.

Overall, the 2015 Scion FR-S is a fantastic coupe that deserves the attention of any and every car enthusiast out there. Definitely give it a look, if a sports car is what you’re looking for. Its direct competitors are Subaru BRZ and Hyundai Genesis.

2015 FR-S is equipped with the proven 2.0L 4-cylinder boxer DOHC 16-valve engine with dual VVT. The engine is front-mounted, and has an output of 200 hp and 151 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed transmission and RWD. The customer can choose between model with manual or automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Dynamic Rev Menagment. Model with manual transmission has EPA ratings of 22/30/25 mpg, while the model with automatic transmission has EPA rating of 25/34/28 mpg – city/hwy/combined.

Interiors and Special Features:

Don't be fooled by the Scion FR-S's spartan interior. While there may not be too many moving parts inside, the things you can touch all feel solid and well-built.

Cargo space isn't abundant, but it's not bad for a two-plus-two coupe. The trunk is reasonably sized with a well-shaped aperture allowing medium-sized bags to fit easily. The rear seats also fold flat to open up much more horizontal space, though taller items won't fit in the trunk. 

Scion says the FR-S was designed to hold four wheels and tires, a toolbox, and a helmet--all you need for a basic day at the track.

The front seats are roomy and comfortable, while also offering enough bolstering for support during spirited driving. Head and leg room are also quite good, accommodating drivers over six feet tall with ease. The rear seats are small, and only minimal knee and leg room is available with the front seats at their rearmost positions. With slightly shorter front-row occupants, the rear seat can work even for taller adults, but on the whole, it's best reserved for children and gear.

Safety features:

Advanced technology safety features like blind-spot monitors and lane-keeping aren't available in the Scion FR-S, but, at the $25,000 price point, that's understandable.

Standard safety equipment includes the basics, like six airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability & traction control. A limited-slip differential improves low-grip traction and starts from a stop. 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given the FR-S a five-star overall score, while the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated it 'good' in all categories--although it hasn't yet been tested in the new small-overlap frontal category.
