Quick Look

The 2015 Ram 3500 is the lower-end entry in the brand’s heavy-duty pickup truck lineup, sitting right above the 2500 and below the 4500 – but that means very little in terms of actual power output. They are all ridiculously powerful. The 3500’s 6.7-litre Cummins turbodiesel can produce the impressive 370 horsepower and 865 pound-feet of torque.

Full Review

The 2015 Ram 3500 is the lower-tier entry in the brand’s heavy-duty pickup lineup – but that doesn’t meant much in terms of quality since the 4500 and 5500 are not that different. The main concern for the three main pickup truck brands – Ram, Ford and General Motors – is to deliver more horsepower and torque than the competitor, it seems. This is especially easy in the case of turbodiesel pickups, where carmakers can increase power and torque just by rewriting a bit of software. Eventually this arms race will stop, but currently, the 3500’s 6.7-litre Cummins turbodiesel can produce the stupendous 865 pound-feet of torque – which is bound to increase.

In terms of exterior design, the new Ram 3500 does what the rest of the heavy-duty lineup does – borrow cues from the 1500 truck. They are not the same though, so these heavy-duty versions do have their own identities. The 3500 features a taller grille that lets more airflow into the radiators, while offering a more aggressive look. The front bumpers are not the same either since the 3500 still has the larger, more landscape-driven fog lights. You can also get your 3500 with a dual-rear-wheel axle, which means that the rear fenders will need to accommodate the extra tire width – and they do as they neatly wrap around the truck. This actually allows them to fit in with the rest of the truck perfectly – unlike the sloppy fenders in the case of Ford.

Expect to see standard big-truck features like towing mirrors and exterior mirrors that rotate 90 degrees to let you see more. We would also like to give a special mention to chrome – since it covers most of the vehicle, including its 17-inch wheels.

Inside, the Ram 3500’s cabin can be as minimalistic or luxurious as you’d like it to be, which makes highly configurable. The Tradesman trim gets you vinyl floors and seats, along with a fantastic combination of ruggedness and comfort. The Laramie Longhorn is for those who want some luxury though, offering as many upscale features as a luxury sedan. Those include heated leather seats with power adjustment, power-adjustable pedals, 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system and tons of storage compartments. Fit and finish are superb in the 3500, while vibration and noise levels are as low as they should be in this type of vehicle.

You will also find more than a few tow-ready features here, such as the optional backup camera for trailer hook-ups, as well as an integrated trailer brake controller that connects the trailer’s brakes to the truck’s ABS system, while the vehicle’s stability control software counters trailer sway. Other features include a gauge cluster that happens to be simple and easy to comprehend, with all the important information being readily available. Depending on your choice of transmission, you will get either a steering column-mounted gear shifter or a floor-mounted manual gearbox.

Under the hood, the Ram 3500 has three engines. The standard one is a 5.7-litre HEMI V8 that produces 383 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. For more power, you can go for the new 6.4-litre V8 engine, which yields 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. But, if you want your Ram to be a true workhorse vehicle, then there’s always a 6.7-litre Cummins turbodiesel inline six-cylinder that easily generates 370 horsepower and 865 pound-feet of torque. All of the engines are connected to a six-speed automatic transmission, but a manual transmission is also available. However, when equipped with the manual one, the six-cylinder will produce 350 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque.

Overall, the 2015 Ram 3500 is a good truck that does just about everything right. But with a price tag around $40,000, it won’t be everyone’s go-to choice. Plus, who needs 865 pound-feet of torque anyway?

Power and Performance:

The RAM 3500 offers three engines. Standard is a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 rated at 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Drivers who want more power can step up to a new 6.4-liter V8, which boasts 410 hp and 429 lb-ft. For the most taxing jobs, there's a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel inline 6-cylinder, which cranks out up to 370 hp and 865 lb-ft of torque with a 6-speed automatic, or 350 hp and 660 lb-ft with a manual.

The Environmental Protection Agency doesn't test heavy-duty trucks for fuel economy, but don't get your hopes up as far as fuel costs go. We'd expect around 11 miles per gallon in the city with any engine, or 17 mpg on the highway.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside the Ram Heavy Duty is a cabin as spartan or luxurious as you want to make it. Vinyl floors and seats dominate the Tradesman trim level and offer a no-nonsense combination of ruggedness and comfort. Of course, the Laramie Longhorn trim level affords all the bells and whistles normally found on expensive luxury sedans. Heated leather seats with power adjustment, power-adjustable pedals, the intuitive 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system, and more storage compartments than you can shake a stick at.

Safety features:

Standard safety equipment returning to the 2015 Ram 3500 lineup includes 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front side-mounted airbags and front (and in Crew and Mega cabs, rear) head airbags. Dusk-sensing headlights and a post-collision safety system also return to each trim, while the SLT and higher trims boast standard turn-signal-integrated mirrors, even as SLT Big Horn/Lone Star versions, as well as the Laramie trio, boast front fog/driving lights. Oh, and the Laramie in Regular, as well as Longhorn and Limited costume, returns sporting standard Uconnect emergency assistance communications and a remote antitheft alarm.
