Quick Look

The Ram 1500 is a full-size pickup truck that’s ready to take on almost any job its owner would like to accomplish. With its strong reputation, this vehicle continues to be an outstanding part of the segment with the tweaks and upgrades that allow it to stay relevant.

Full Review

The 2015 Ram 1500 is a full-size truck manufactured by Chrysler Group. This vehicle remains a top contender in a very tough segment. Pickup trucks used to be mere heavy-labour assistants, today’s expectation are much higher. A modern pickup must also deliver luxury-like features, sophisticated technology and acceptable comfort. Even with all these expectations, the Ram 1500 is still a considerably good vehicle and, despite some heavy competition, remains one of the best options in the segment. The Ram 1500 was first introduced in 1981 and is now in its four generation. The most recent overhaul was in 2009, with the 2015 model being the final in this generation. The Ram 1500 is available in several different cab and bed configurations, but the real determining factor is the trim level. There are six main trim levels: Tradesman, HFE, SLT, Sport, Laramie and Longhorn. Each of them comes with drastically different features and options.

The Ram 1500 has put an emphasis on distinct style for many years and none of that has changed even as this vehicle ages. The look continues to evolve in order to stay relevant, bringing with it improved style and features. The Ram 1500 was the first pickup to take on the “big-rig” look, which still allows it to stand out in the crowd years later. While the Ram 1500 boasts a standard pickup-truck shape, it’s a little more aerodynamic than the norm. There is a total of five different grille option – with each being attached to a corresponding trim level. While this may seem excessive, these are the kind of underscores Ram is making to maximize its attractiveness. The rear taillamps are available with LED lighting, as are the side-marker lights. Some trims also come equipped with dual exhausts.

The cabin of the Ram 1500 is an example of the need for pickups to deliver more than just capability nowadays. This interior was recently reworked to add even more high-quality materials and high-tech features. Since there are so many trim levels to choose from, there are also different levels of finish. The base Trademark is simple, while the top-notch Longhorn is downright luxurious. Buyers can really have it all in the Ram 1500 – it just depends on what they are looking for. The amount of space is dependent on the chosen cabin style and trim level, but generally speaking the Ram 1500 is relatively comfortable and spacious no matter which version you pick.

The technology features on the Ram 1500 make controlling the vehicle’s potentially confusing functions pretty easy. There are two touchscreen interfaces available in the Ram. One is five inches and the other is 8.4 inches. Upgrades to this system have made it more user-friendly and visually appealing. The touchscreens display Chrysler’s UConnect infotainment system, which controls all of the information, such as the available navigation system, Bluetooth audio connectivity and other functions. Different packages can make technology quite sophisticated, with stand-alone features including a DVD player for front and rear passengers and satellite radio. The UConnect system has been praised as one of the most user-friendly in the pickup segment.

The Ram 1500 is available with a few different powertrain configurations. The first, available on the Tradesman, HFE and SLT is a 3.6-litre gasoline V6 engine that makes 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and two- or all-wheel drive. The higher-end trims come standard with a 5.7-litre diesel-powered V8 engine that can produce 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. It’s optional on all the other trims. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and two- or all-wheel drive. There are two different all-wheel-drive systems available: a traditional part-time system and deluxe with an on-demand Auto 4WD mode.

Overall, the 2015 Ram 1500 is a great option in the heavy-duty pickup truck segment. This vehicle, despite being in its final model year, has a lot to offer. It’s still near the top of the class, embracing the new do-everything personality that pickups have had to adopt in the recent years.

Power and Performance:

Choice is king when configuring a modern pickup truck, and the Ram 1500 offers as much differentiation as any, with the only diesel available in a light-duty pickup, strong gas engines, and an eight-speed automatic.

The Ram's base V-6 is still the best choice for any truck user that needs an open bed more than they need a towing appliance. The 3.6-liter V-6 puts out 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, and comes linked with an eight-speed automatic transmission. With max towing of 6,500 pounds, the six-cylinder Ram's one of the lightest-duty propositions in full-size trucks. It'll haul without much effort, though the engine note moves from a V-8-like sound just off idle to a more strained one once it climbs to highway speed. And though it takes a few tries to reach for a rotary shift knob and not a shift lever, the eight-speed automatic really makes the V-6 a relevant choice; it doesn't hunt endlessly or needlessly for the right gear.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Ram 1500's cabin was reworked for 2013 even though it really didn't need to be. Its overall sense of high quality and upscale flavor were upgraded to an even higher level, making it even more attractive and desirable. New rotary controls for infotainment and climate systems cleaned up the center stack and freed up more space, and a digital cluster replaced some instruments on some models--and even get softly rendered numerals, so attentive are the details.

Safety features:

Crash-test results could stand some improvement in the Ram 1500. The Ram does offer a solid complement of safety gear, especially for a pickup.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the Ram 1500 reassuring scores. The mechanically identical 2014 model received four stars overall, as well as five stars in side crash, and we expect those numbers to be carried over to the 2015 model. The NHTSA does give the 2015 model the same four-star frontal rating and three-star rollover score as the 2014.
