Quick Look

The 2015 Nissan Altima may no longer be the ultimate underdog performance vehicle, but it’s still something to behold. The Altima’s new perks are comfort and safety, which means that it’s more suited for small families than gonzo car enthusiasts. Still, Nissan’s 3.5-litre V6 engine, which can pump out 270 horsepower, is a decent offer no matter how you slice it.

Full Review

The 2015 Nissan Altima is mid-size sedan that we would recommend to just about anybody. It’s comfortable, safe and attractive, which means that it’s a fantastic vehicle for smaller families. There used to be a time when the Altima offered power and an engaging drive experience, but that’s no longer true – it’s a different beast these days, but it’s still a good one.

On the outside, the 2015 Altima strikes a difficult balance between looking stylish and trendy, which means that it won’t run into the issue of looking outdated any time soon. Nissan achieves through its classic proportions, which make the Altima seem wide, while endowing it with an aggressive stance. The body's long lines give it a touch of attitude without going overboard, like in the case of the Hyundai Sonata. The resulting vehicle is certainly less attractive than the Ford Fusion, Mazda6 or Chevrolet Malibu, but it still looks more distinctive than the Toyota Camry or Volkswagen Passat.

On the inside, the new Nissan Altima features a clear layout, which involves plenty of high-end and soft-touch materials, user-friendly centre stack as well as NASA-inspired "zero gravity" front bucket seats. The goal of those bucket seats is to place the human body in the most comfortable position possible – to make the occupant feel weightless, essentially. Not surprisingly, they work very well long trips, especially for a mid-size-sedan. The rear seats are great too, with plenty of legroom. The trunk is big enough to fit in just about anything, which is always welcome.

Under the hood of the 2015 Altima sedan you can find either a four-cylinder or a V6. The 2.5-litre four is meant to handle lighter weights, while delivering higher efficiency. It produces 182 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. The 3.5-litre V6, on the other hand, provides improved fuel economy, while pumping out 270 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Both iterations are front-wheel-drive only, while channeling the power through the only gearbox offered, which is Nissan's next-generation Xtronic continuously variable automatic transmission. While it’s not the most beloved type of transmission, it does come with fixed-ratio-simulating manual shift paddles in the top-tier Altima models.

Overall, the 2015 Nissan Altima is well worth the purchase price, which isn’t that high, given what it offers. So, if you’re looking for a fantastic efficiency vehicle for you and your family, definitely give this sedan a try!

Power and Performance:

While many manufacturers are offering different 4-cylinder engines, hybrids, and diesels, the 2015 Nissan Altima sedan goes the traditional route by offering a base 4-cylinder and a V6 as the "up" engine. The 2.5-liter four is designed for lighter weight and higher efficiency, while the 3.5-liter V6 offers improved fuel economy, adding one mpg to the combined and highway scores. Both drive the Altima's front wheels through the only gearbox offered, Nissan's next-generation Xtronic continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Not everyone loves a CVT, which drives engine revs ahead of vehicle speed during strong acceleration, but this one accounts for both the 4-cylinder and the V6's impressive fuel economy, and it comes with fixed-ratio-simulating manual shift paddles on up-level Altima models.

Interiors and Special Features:

No matter how much you like the 2015 Nissan Altima's interior layout, or its plentiful high-end and soft-touch materials, or the easy-to-use center stack, it's the NASA-inspired "zero gravity" front bucket seats that you'll love the most. They're designed to approach the relaxed "neutral posture" the human body assumes in a weightless environment. While we didn't book time on Virgin Galactic to test the claim, we can say that they're surprisingly comfortable for the long haul, especially for midsize-sedan class cars. The rear seat offers very good legroom, and the huge trunk can swallow just about anything.

Safety features:

Nissan offers several new safety technologies to help Altima drivers avoid accidents, such as lane-departure, blind spot and moving-object warning systems. To supplement the usual new stability-control technologies, the Altima features active understeer control. This automatically brakes the inside front wheel when the car is going too quickly into a turn, reducing the understeer effect common in front-wheel-drive cars. Understeer is when a car doesn't turn as much as the driver intends because the front tires are sliding. The Easy-Fill Tire Alert system simplifies pumping up the tires by chirping the Altima's horn when you've put in enough air.

In crash tests, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives the 2015 Altima an overall rating of five (its highest score), with five stars in the front- and side-impact tests and four stars in the roof-strength test. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Altima a Top Safety Pick, giving it top marks in all but the small-overlap front-crash test, which was rated as Acceptable.
