Quick Look

The 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is the star of the Lancer lineup, even though the lineup itself isn't nearly as impressive as it wants its buyers to think it is. On the one hand, it's fast and relatively good-looking, but on the other, it's cheap, ugly and noisy, particularly on the inside. With so many economy sedans crossing over into luxury territory, this kind of delivery makes the Lancer stand out – but not in a good way.

Full Review

The 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer remains a tried-and-true economy car, which means that this compact sedan's fits and finishes are low-quality at best, while the cabin is as noisy as you'd expect. The Lancer Evolution isn't any different, which make both of these cars stand out in today's car market – but not in a good way. So many modern economy cars have managed to cross into luxury territory with their style and features that the Lancer Evolution feels like a dinosaur at times.

In terms of looks, the 2015 Lancer serves up angular yet sporty design, along with an aggressive face and forward stance. The Evolution is noticeably more aggressive than the regular Lancer models, offering flared and vented fenders, two big exhaust outlets and a huge rear spoiler on GSR trims. The Evolution is also a little lower and shorter, but with a longer wheelbase and width for improved handling.

On the inside, the 2015 Lancer isn't quite as stylish as it is on the outside, sadly. This is where the Lancer truly shows its outdated nature, with bland, cheap plastics all over the place and lacklustre design. Telescoping steering wheel isn't available on all models, which makes it tougher to find the right fit. And while the Evolution models serve up well-bolstered, low-sitting Recaro seats at the front, there is no height adjustment, which might make it difficult for shorter drivers to see over the dash.

Under the hood, the 2015 Lancer Evolution features a2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 291 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. Just like the engine in the Ralliart model, this one is connected to a twin-clutch automatic transmission, which allows for superb performance, particularly at high speeds. The Evolution is clearly the most performance-oriented Lancer here, but it does come at a price – by running on premium gasoline, which means that you will have to pay extra at the pump to satiate that turbo engine.

Overall, the 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is a bit of a mishmash of things, particularly this higher-level model. Yes, it is powerful, but it is also rather primitive in the cabin when compared to similarly-priced vehicles. Our recommendation is to check out the Honda Civic, Ford Focus and other compact sedans before looking at this one.

Power and Performance:

The Evolution is of course the performance star of the lineup. It packs a 291-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that's very peaky by today's standards, with quite a bit of turbo lag and the need to be revved high into its range to extract its power. When it arrives, it's phenomenal, and delivered confidently with an Active Center Differential, helical-gear front differential, and Active Yaw Control, altogether giving this plebeian sedan the agility, tractability, and poise to match much more expensive sport machines. You can get a notchy five-speed manual gearbox, but our pick would actually be the six-speed 'Twin Clutch SST' gearbox--a dual-clutch automatic that actually serves to help keep you in the turbo boost. If drivability is important, though, you might prefer the Ralliart for its better drivability and broader torque curve.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer's sharp and modern exterior styling does not extend into its cabin. Here, the Lancer is showing its age, and bland, cheap plastic doesn't help. The lack of a telescoping steering wheel on all models makes it harder to find a perfect fit. Evo editions have well-bolstered, low-sitting Recaro seats up front, but without height adjustment, shorter drivers will struggle to see over the dash. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob make GT and Ralliart trims more appealing.

Safety features:

The 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer comes with all of the expected safety technologies, as well as the crisp, direct driving dynamics you'd need to potentially avoid an accident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has rated the 2015 Lancer with four stars across the board. And the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given the Lancer top 'good' ratings in frontal offset, side impact, and rear impact tests, along with the roof strength test. Neither agency extends these results to Evolution and Ralliart models. The Evolution has its own exclusive, stronger and performance-focused body structure.
