Quick Look

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C250 is a charming sedan that delivers good looks, amazing cabin and tons of features. Its 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine may not be the most powerful in the C-Class lineup, but it can produce 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque, and that’s not bad. The most appealing aspect of this entry-level luxury vehicle is its $40,000 (or so) price point, which makes it accessible to many potential luxury car buyers.

Full Review

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has definitely grown in size and luxury over the last few years. It has also managed to secure one of the best interiors in the industry. The 2015 C250 sedan – the lowest entry in the lineup – delivers slick exterior design, comfortable cabin and tons of features. It has the weakest engine in the lineup, but that doesn’t mean anything since it’s still a fast car.

The exterior design of the new Mercedes C250 and C-Class as a whole reminds us of the E-Class and S-Class vehicles, borrowing aspects like the aggressive front grille, all-encompassing character lines and stretched rear end. However, since the “C” is actually a compact, its overall look is far more purposeful and stern than on its sprightly CLA cousin. For added style, you can light up the three-pointed star on the grille with LEDs – but you’ll need to pay a couple hundred bucks for that. The optional Sport package allows for an even more aggressive body and wheels.

Inside, the 2015 C250 ditches the cold and clinical demeanor of the older models in favour of an attractive selection of wood and aluminum finishes, along with a relatively clean layout that also feels elegant. What allows the layout to remain clean is the new rotary dial and touchpad, which responds to gestures, swipes and even handwriting. For more luxury, you can also add the Air Balance Package that comes with a fragrance diffuser that basically sprays perfume through the air conditioning system. We thought it was neat too.

Under the hood, the 2015 C250 is a bit lacklustre – but that’s only because you get to pay around $40,000 for this vehicle. The engine offered is a 1.8-litre four-cylinder that will give you 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque. For such a slow car, the fuel economy is a bit weak, with the combined rating sitting at 11.3 litres per 100 kilometres. The car comes standard with rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Overall, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C250 is a spectacular sedan that owes much of its appeal to its luxurious cabin and relatively low price. If you want a more powerful vehicle, there are other options in the lineup, but if you need affordability above all else, then this option is as good as it gets.

Interiors and Special Features:

Lovely. Few other words suffice when it comes to describing the new Mercedes C-Class' interior, especially on the heels of the outgoing model, which had a cold, clinical demeanor. The new C comes available with an attractive array of wood and aluminum finishes, and a relatively clutter-free layout that manages to still feel elegant. Central to the de-cluttering is a new rotary dial and touchpad that responds to gestural inputs, swipes and handwriting. Adding to the upscale feel is an available Air Balance Package with a fragrance diffuser that atomizes perfume into the air conditioning system.

Safety features:

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class hasn't yet been crash tested by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but it is built with safety in mind from the ground up.

Pretty much the entire suite of Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive active-safety features are now offered in the C-Class -- and for the typical big-city-commuting C-Class customer, they’re probably better put to use here than in the flagship S-Class. Highlights include Attention Assist that warns you if you might be distracted or dozing off; Crosswind Assist; a Pre-Safe braking and pedestrian detection system; Collision Prevention Assist Plus; BAS Plus with Cross-Traffic Assist; and an Active Lane Keeping Assist system that will steer to keep you in your lane for some seconds before giving you a stern warning. There’s also Active Parking Assist, to almost effortlessly get into parallel spots. And with Distronic Plus with Steering Assist you get one of the best and most advanced active cruise control systems.
