Quick Look

The 2015 Lincoln MKZ offers style, luxury and comfort in one impressive package. It may not boast new looks, but everything else onboard is top-notch, making it one of the more desirable vehicles in its segment. That said, the cabin does seem a bit “cheap,” while its 3.7 V6 engine consumes far too much fuel.

Full Review

The 2015 Lincoln MKZ carries the same design as the 2013 model, but it’s still just as dependable, comfortable and efficient as before. So, when it comes to midsize luxury sedans, the MKZ remains unparalleled. And if you’re really interested in a new look, you can get that with the top-priced Black Label trim, which offers a variety of retro styles for you to enjoy. Still, this vehicle is far from perfect, with the cabin in particular needing several important improvements.

The new Lincoln MKZ is based on the same platform as the Ford Fusion, but that’s not readily apparent. It’s clear from the first moment you look at it that Lincoln has done a marvellous job with the MKZ's styling, giving it the kind of upscale flair that the Fusion simply lacks. Though the grille design is somewhat redundant due to its size – the huge-grille trend can go away any time now – the capless-fuel-filler system is just wonderful as it allows you to refill without getting your hands dirty, or forgetting the fuel cap.

In spite of a very good-looking exterior body, the 2015 Lincoln MKZ's interior is in need of a few improvements. Everything is properly laid-out, but the materials, textures and design are simply not luxurious enough to compete against other similarly-priced vehicles. The MyLincoln Touch controls are unintuitive, while the touchscreen menus are too convoluted – even for simple tasks. On top of that, the MKZ's cabin is uncompromisingly cramped, with back-seat legroom and headroom being especially underwhelming.

If you look under the hood, you’ll see that the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder is the base engine choice, but you can stick in a hybrid powertrain at no additional cost if fuel economy is what you want. Another engine that you can have is a 300-horsepower 3.7-litre V6, but unfortunately its performance advantage over the four-cylinder isn't all that great. Both conventional engines are combined with a six-speed automatic, while the hybrid options rely on a continuously variable transmission.

The problem with the 2015 Lincoln MKZ is its near-$40,000 price tag. It’s just too darn expensive for the amount of goods it offers. This is one of the few vehicles that we’d rather recommend buying used than new – if at all.

Power and Performance:

A turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder serves as the base engine choice in the 2015 Lincoln MKZ, or if you prefer, a hybrid powertrain can be had at no additional cost if you prefer mpg over mph. Also on the roster is a 300-horsepower 3.7-liter V6, though its performance advantage over the base 4-cylinder isn't as noteworthy as the benefit to refinement. Both conventional powerplants are matched with a 6-speed automatic, while the hybrid variant directs power through a continuously variable transmission. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard, with all-wheel drive restricted to non-hybrid models.

Interiors and Special Features:

While we generally like the exterior styling, the 2015 Lincoln MKZ's interior needs improvement. It's laid out well enough, but the materials, textures and design aren't luxurious enough to compete in this class. The MyLincoln Touch controls are a hassle to use, and we dislike having to navigate touch-screen menus just to perform simple tasks. Despite being a large car on the outside, this Lincoln's interior is surprisingly cramped. Rear-seat legroom and headroom are especially in short supply.

Safety features:

The 2015 Lincoln MKZ comes with standard safety features like antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side-impact airbags, front knee airbags and side curtain airbags. The vehicle also offers the programmable MyKey system, with lets parents set up limits for speed and stereo volume for their kids. Sync comes with emergency crash notification that automatically dials 911 if an airbag gets deployed.

However, that’s not. You can optional features like a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring system, back cross-traffic alerts, lane-departure warning and lane keeping assist systems, a forward collision warning system with brake support and airbag-embedded back seatbelts.
