Quick Look

The 2015 Lexus ES 300h is not a typical Lexus vehicle, and that’s because its main goal is to provide comfort rather than optimal performance. That said, the 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and battery-powered electric motor do give the ES 300h plenty to work with, especially when it comes to fuel economy, with ratings like 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres  on the highway.

Full Review

The 2015 Lexus ES lineup sits right between the IS and GS sport sedans, being far more focused on comfort as opposed to performance. The ES 300h hybrid is based on the same architecture as the Toyota Avalon architecture rather than the Camry, like a few years ago. Thanks to a major redesign several model years ago, the ES has gained a much more engaging on-road performance, a more interesting shape and improved technology features. It’s clear that Toyota wants this vehicle to perform well on the market, which is why it’s not at all surprising that it has.

On the outside, the Lexus ES stays true to what makes Lexus vehicles worth their lofty name. However, it’s important to note that this is not the Lexus of old. At the front, the ES serves up a dynamic spindle grille that you’ll find on almost every new Lexus model. In the meantime, flared fenders and a high beltline on the sides endow the whole vehicle with a slightly aggressive stance. At the back, the C-pillars smoothly blend into the vehicle’s short trunk. The ES 300h’s performance-driven sibling ES 350 gets twin tailpipes that peek out from underneath the rear bumper. On the other hand, the ES 300h hybrid gets only one pipe that hides below a spoiler running under the bumper. All the Lexus ES vehicles rely on low-resistance tires and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, but you can get larger ones, if you wish.

On the inside, the Lexus ES 300h has a surprisingly spacious cabin, with enough room for three adults in the back. At the front, you get even more benefits with extendable thigh support for taller drivers and longer lower cushions. The driver also gets a 10-way power seat, but there’s also the optional 12-way seat that offers extendable lower cushions. Thanks to all these additions, the ES now has about four inches more legroom than before, with a wheelbase that’s about two inches longer than that on the Camry. Since the ES 300h is a hybrid, it loses the trunk pass-through and some trunk space to accommodate its battery. Everything else seems to be the same.

Standard features include automatic climate control, a 3.5-inch colour info display, an eight-speaker audio system with Bluetooth streaming audio, USB/iPod connectivity and more. Some of the standouts, however, are the Mark Levinson audio system, hard-drive-based navigation, backup camera and Enform with AppSuite, which includes Bing, MovieTickets.com, iHeartRadio, OpenTable, Pandora, Facebook Places, and Yelp.

Under the hood, the Lexus ES 300h has a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and battery-powered electric motor that generate a total of 200 horsepower. The gasoline engine alone produces 156 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque. The fuel economy ratings are 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. The powertrain is connected to an automatic, continuously variable transmission (CVT), so if you prefer a manual gearbox – tough luck!

Generally speaking though, the 2015 Lexus ES 300h is a fantastic hybrid vehicle, even if it’s not exactly the fastest. If you want to drive in a comfortable cabin, while leaving a relatively small ecological footprint, then you should definitely give this sedan a look.

Power and Performance:

As has always been the case with this model line, the 2015 Lexus ES models place performance after comfort in the priority list -- and that's perfectly fine for most shoppers who might consider this roomy sedan. While it retains a relaxed driving demeanor, you might be surprised by how athletic this model has become when you really need it to hustle.

There is also, in all fairness, a difference in how the two ES models accelerate accelerate; the V-6 models are still the quickest and smoothest, surely, but the ES 300h—which pairs a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine with an electric motor-generator system—is surprisingly vivid. Lexus' Drive Select gets Eco and Power modes, and you have a choice in how the hybrid system responds, and there's even now an EV-only mode.

Interiors and Special Features:

Interior space is one of the ES sedans' strengths, as while it's a mid-size car on the outside, its wheelbase is now that of a large car—which really pays off in space for those in the back seat. There's now enough room for three adults back there, if you need it, while in front, for the first time, Lexus is offering an available extendable thigh support for taller drivers (the lower cushions are longer, too).

All ES models now include a 10-way power driver seat, while the available 12-way seat brings extendable lower cushions—a feature some of our long-legged editorial team would definitely opt for.

Safety features:

The 2015 Lexus ES 300h benefits from solid safety ratings, with “good” scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety – though it hasn’t received a rating in the challenging small overlap frontal category. Standard safety features include ten airbags, including front and rear curtain bags, as well as rear seat-mounted side airbags. You also get electronic stability control and other system like anti-lock brakes.

Optional safety features include a Blind Sport Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Alert system and Pre-Collision System.
