Quick Look

Aside from a few improvements in areas such as ride, handling and comfort, the 2015 Kia Soul EV is virtually the same car as the one last year, which is fine. Since this is the “EV” version, it has the most interesting powertrain out of all the Souls – an AC synchronous electric motor, which delivers efficiency of 2.5 litres per 100 kilometres city and 3.1 litres per 100 kilometres highway.

Full Review

The 2015 Kia Soul EV is the electric version of the regular Soul and it’s almost the same vehicle as the one that preceded it in 2014. It has received a few tweaks here and there, like improved ride, handling and comfort, but the bulk of this five-door boxy hatchback will seem familiar to those who are, well, familiar with the Soul EV. In fact, last year was the first redesign the Soul has received since its introduction in 2010, so we were not banking on seeing too many changes anyway.

On the outside, the Soul EV still has that tall, rectangular profile, but thanks to a revised front end and tall taillights, it manages to look fresh. Its tall roof gives the vehicle a very eye-catching appearance, but it’s not just for looks.  It allows for plenty of headroom and cargo space, along with raised seating positions and good visibility for everyone inside. Since this is the electric version, you get a hidden charging port at the front and a two-tone paint scheme, which set it apart from the other Kia Soul models.

Inside, the 2015 Soul EV features two seating rows, meant for five passengers. The quality and level of functionality improve with each of the three trim levels.  For instance, the base models have cloth seats, but if you go for a higher trim, you will be able to get Nappa leather. The best aspect of the cabin is its mix of playfulness and practicality. Thanks to the vehicle’s boxy shape and folding back seats, there is quite a bit of room in here – which is one of the Soul EV’s practical aspects. You get the playfulness in the vehicle’s speaker lights, which pulsate to the beat in a very unique fashion. As an option, you can get a panoramic sunroof, which is actually unexpected, given the car’s economical nature. We also like the fact that the electric variant features bio-friendly materials and an organic LED instrument screen that actually works well.

Under the hood, the Soul EV has an electric motor combined with a lithium-ion polymer battery pack. The two can produce 109 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque, while delivering fuel economy ratings of 2.5 litres per 100 kilometres city and 3.1 litres per 100 kilometres highway. It has a range of about 130-160 kilometres per charge. The charging process is expected to take from 24 hours on a 120-volt outlet to under five hours on a 240-volt outlet.

Overall, the 2015 Kia Soul EV is a very peculiar vehicle, but that’s not anything new. If you dig the look and the available environmentally-friendly options, then this car is for you. If you also want a vehicle that’s relatively low-cost, then this car is definitely for you. That’s all we have to say.

Power and Performance:

Instead of a gasoline engine, the 2015 Kia Soul EV will use an electric motor powered by a 27-kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery. The motor will generate just 109 horsepower, but 210 pound-feet of torque should make the Soul EV feel sufficiently quick around town.

Kia says the Soul EV will cover zero to 62 mph in 11.2 seconds. That's slower than the gas-powered Soul (which weighs 330 fewer pounds), but still faster than the Nissan Leaf, one of the Soul EV's electric rivals. Using a 240-volt outlet, the Soul EV's battery will recharge in less than five hours. The car can also charge on a 120-volt outlet or at a DC fast-charge station. A full battery is rated to deliver 92 miles of range.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2015 Kia Soul EV features a 2-row, 5-passenger cabin whose looks and functions improve as you climb the three trim levels, from cloth seats in base models to available Nappa leather in top-line versions. The 2015 Soul does an admirable job of blending practicality and whimsy. This hatchback's boxy shape and folding rear seats make it surprisingly spacious, while features such as speaker lights that pulsate to the beat are nothing if not different. The optional panoramic sunroof is an unexpected treat in such an economy car. The electric Soul features bio-friendly materials and an efficient organic LED instrument screen.

Safety features:

The Kia Soul was previously rated “Poor” in the small-overlap test, but the modifications to the 2015 model bring the car’s score in this test up to a “Good” rating. That means that the 2015 Kia Soul now qualifies as a Top Safety Pick, as it is rated “Good” in the IIHS’ other moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests. The Kia Soul does not offer any sort of frontal collision warning technology, meaning that it is not eligible for the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick + award.
