Negotiate Smarter with the Best Car Buying Tools

The 2014 Kia Sorento was already an excellent family crossover, but the 2015 model manages to make it even better. The new car comes with two improved engines, a slicker cabin and more features than ever before. On top of that, the 2015 Kia Sorento is one of the safest family cars around, so it should satisfy any safety-conscious parent out there.

It seems like the 2014 Sorento model wasn't good enough for Kia, which is why the manufacturer has endowed the 2015 Kia Sorento with an all-new set of upgrades. From its engine to its cabin – the popular crossover has improvements in nearly every area. So, if you're looking for a neat family car that's powerful, efficient and safe, then the Sorento is definitely a vehicle worth checking out.

First of off, let's talk about size since the most important aspect of a family car is its ability to fit the whole family (which makes sense, doesn't it?). The crossover is available as either a seven- or five-seat vehicle. The front seats and second-row seats are particularly comfortable, offering plenty of space and adjustability to cater to individuals of all sizes. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said regarding the third-row bench, which can only properly fit in small children. So if you're planning to drive six adults in your crossover, you're better off with cars like Honda Civic, GMC Yukon or Chevy Traverse. The cargo is somewhat cramped, but you can expand it by folding down the third-row seats flat.

The overall design of the interior is slick and sexy, so you won't be repulsed by it looks. In fact, there's nothing better out there for this kind of price, which is always a good thing. You'll find elegant touches like a leather transmission selector boot and a plethora of useful features like an LCD speedometer, hefty panoramic sunroof and retractable second-row window shades. Kia has definitely done its best to make the cabin be as pleasant as possible.

On the outside, things have a received a few changes too. Now there's a selection of anodized silver metal or black mesh grille. The crosshatch lower air intake is also much wider in the 2015 model. Additionally, the 2015 Sorento comes with exterior mirrors that fold in at the push of a button, headlights that come with an LED touch and external door pockets that light up when you approach the car at night. And if that's not enough, the SX Limited variant offers 19-inch wheels, red brake calipers and xenon HID headlights.

In terms of powertrains, the new Kia Sorento offers two of them. The first one is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that puts out 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. This engine is not bad, offering decent fuel economy and plenty of power. However, Kia also offers 3.3-litre V6, which can generate 290 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. This is only a touch more expensive than the four-cylinder, while offering more power and about the same amount of fuel efficiency. So, you're wondering which one to pick, go with the V6 – because it makes the four-cylinder seem almost worthless in comparison. That said, both engine are decent when compared to the competition, which makes the Sorento a fairly powerful crossover overall.

If you're safety conscious, which you should be in the case of a family car, then we're happy to let you know that the new Kia Sorento is as safe as it gets. The most notable safety features include four-wheel anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control, front and rear head airbags, front side-mounted airbags and active front headrests.

No matter how you look at it, the 2015 Kia Sorento is an excellent car that improves on nearly every aspect of the 2014 offering. And since the 2014 Sorento was an excellent car too, there's very little to dislike here. Definitely take it out for a test drive. It will be worth your time.

Power and Performance:

Because the 4-cylinder engine isn't markedly cheaper or more efficient than the V6, and because the V6's 290 horsepower is a lot to feed through only the front wheels, we recommend the 2015 Kia Sorento with its new V6 engine and all-wheel drive. The all-wheel-drive system features a locking center differential for especially difficult conditions and incorporates a new Torque Vectoring Cornering Control system that further enhances drivability. All Sorento configurations offer the same 6-speed, manually-selectable automatic transmission.

Interiors and Special Features:

Interior highlights from the well-equipped 2015 Kia Sorento models we've driven include small touches, such as a leather transmission selector boot, and unexpected features, including an LCD speedometer, retractable 2nd-row window shades and a huge panoramic sunroof. Combined with a next-gen level of refinement for Kia, you'll have a hard time finding a nicer interior for the money. The Sorento definitely gives up some passenger and cargo room to just about every other 3-row SUV worth considering, but a rear seat that slides, reclines and folds down in 40/20/40 sections adds valuable flexibility. The optional third row is best reserved for little ones.

Safety features:

Look for such standard safety features as 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front and rear head airbags, front side-mounted airbags and active front headrests to return in the 2015 Sorento lineup. Also look for daytime running lights and a remote antitheft alarm to be retained on all trims, with front fog/driving lights expected to return aboard the EX and higher versions. Additionally, look for the EX and above trims to boast a post-collision safety system and UVO emergency assistance and alerts, while the Limited should additionally offer standard auto-leveling high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights. Blind-spot monitoring is, by the way, again expected to be optional across the lineup.
