Quick Look

The 2015 Kia K900 is a living proof that Kia is ready to tackle the luxury car market. It's good-looking, comfortable and fast, just like the competition, but it's also more affordable than its rivals. The luxury sedan's 5.0-litre V8 engine is no pushover either – though it does lack in the department of fuel economy.

Full Review

The 2015 Kia K900 is a large luxury sedan that's here to make a very clear statement – that the Korean brand is no longer to be associated exclusively with small economy cars. With the K900, Kia has created a vehicle that's larger and more luxurious than the ones it's recognized for, but it's also cheaper than the standard competitors in this segment. It's a very attractive package as far we are concerned – even it doesn't quite reach the levels of luxury of the more expensive Optima Limited.

In terms of exterior appearance, this sedan is actually very similar to its Optima and Cadenza siblings – except that it's bigger. It's over 500 centimetres in length, featuring numerous LED lights and 19-inch wheels – or 18-inch, if you go for one of them V6 models. The overall design allows the K900 to look sleek yet subtle, the same way that BMW and Audi sedans manage to look. The only problematic design elements are the port holes above and behind the front wheels. That said, we like the fact that when this car is parked and locked, the side mirrors automatically fold inward – to prevent them from getting damaged, while also making a fashion statement.

On the inside, the K900 has a five-passenger cabin with plenty of space and even more features. The front seats are comfortable and adjustable, with nice little touches like wood steering wheel and trim. The rear seat boasts tons of legroom as well as reclining functionality – there is no massage feature like certain other luxury sedans (at least, not yet). The car also offers sunshades for privacy as well as a control module in the rear armrest, which allows passengers to control climate functions. You can make things even more luxurious with the available Nappa leather, but it isn't quite as soft as soft as what you'd find in the competitors.

Under the hood, the 2015 K900 offers a selection of two possible engines. There's a 3.8-litre V6, which produces 311 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque. Then there is also a 5.0-litre V8 that provides 420 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. While this engine certainly offers a lot of power, its fuel economy is 13.1 litres per 100 kilometres combined on premium-grade gasoline. The V6 actually perform a lot better in this regard, with a combined fuel economy rating of 11.2 litres per 100 kilometres. Each engine can be connected to an eight-speed transmission as well as rear-wheel drive. Disappointingly enough, all-wheel drive is not available, which we might turn off certain buyers. Both engines have the ability to change their level of responsiveness thanks to four different driving modes – Normal, Sport, Eco and Snow. We like both engines, so when choosing one, be sure to figure out what you value more in your powertrain: speed or efficiency.

Overall, the 2015 Kia K900 is a fantastic luxury sedan that also happens to be more affordable than the competition. Aside from a few caveats, it looks great, performs well and makes you feel incredibly comfortable. We highly recommend giving this one a look.

Power and Performance:

At its first drive event for the K900, Kia offered only the top-of-the-line VIP model, featuring a 420-horsepower direct-injected V-8 engine—Kia’s first—that produces 376 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that drives the rear wheels. This is a similar powertrain to that of the Hyundai Genesis and Equus models, and it provides suitable power to move this relatively heavy car expeditiously.

We noticed some lag in throttle and shift response when flooring the accelerator, more so than in the Jaguar XJ sedan, which uses the same eight-speed transmission paired to a V-8 engine. The K900’s shift lever could be moved into a manual-shift mode to control the transmission, but oddly, paddle shifters behind the steering wheel are not available, even as an option. When pressed hard, the exhaust note rises perceptibly, but it’s a generic mechanical sound rather than the distinctive sound you might find in a Jaguar or Maserati.

Interiors and Special Features:

The K900 lives up to its luxury status with a 5-passenger cabin filled with space and amenities. In Korea, this car is often used as livery for executives, and it's easy to see why. The rear seat boasts loads of legroom and is available with reclining functionality (sorry – no massage feature yet). Sunshades afford privacy, and a control module integrated into the rear armrest enables passengers to control climate functions. The comfortable front seats are an equally pleasant place to be. Nice touches include wood steering wheel and trim. Nappa leather is available, but it's not as soft as what competitors offer.

Safety features:

Standard safety features for the 2015 Kia K900 include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front and rear seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, front and rearview cameras, and UvoeServices that includes emergency assistance and teen-oriented monitoring features such as curfew, speed and geo-fencing. The V8-powered K900 models also have a blind-spot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert and a lane departure warning system. These features are optional on V6 models.
