Quick Look

The 2015 Jeep Wrangler is the perfect vehicle for braving any trail regardless of weather conditions. The new model doesn’t offer too many improvements over the predecessors, but it doesn’t have to, given that it still serves up the design and capabilities of its World War II ancestor. The biggest appeal of this convertible SUV is its 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine, which can produce 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque.

Full Review

The 2015 Jeep Wrangler is the only SUV convertible with traditional four-wheel drive, which means it’s one of the few vehicles out there that can make off-roading a “real” experience. What we mean by that is that the Wrangler was designed specifically for travelling across rough terrains. The reason for that is not just the vehicle’s technical prowess, but its heritage as a World War II military machine, which is where its design and capabilities truly came from. In other words, this is not a typical SUV and it’s most definitely not for everyone.

The Wrangler has definitely grown since its early days. It still sports the boxy shape from the good old days, which was developed to ease production and lower the costs during war-time. The design allows for a big upright windshield, which offers excellent visibility and extremely short overhangs for excellent approach and departure angles. What has changed over the decades are the size and weight of the vehicle. Everything else is very much the same; in other words, it’s still a Jeep. Several trims comes with their own sits of neat little features, such as black touches of the retro Willys Wheeler, which takes its cues from the Wrangler Sport model, and Willys Wheeler, which was inspired by the Sport S, as well as the power-dome hood on the Polar trim. Since this is the regular version of the SUV, it comes with only two doors, being 152.8 inches in overall length.

On the inside, the 2015 Wrangler offers cloth seats as well as functional but somewhat bland design – but that’s only if you go for the base Sport trim.  Upper trim levels, like the Sahara Unlimited, serve up two-tone leather and even some luxury, which includes plush comfort. The rear seats can fold flat to allow for a sizeable cargo area, which can fit plenty of gear and big bags for off-roading trips.

Under the hood, the new Jeep Wrangler only has one engine – a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6, which can yield 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The delivery is smooth enough to allow for very pleasurable trips across rough terrains. This is the same engine that has made its appearance in the 2014 version, but the lack of an upgrade is not necessarily a bad thing since we sincerely believe this engine to be the best one in a Wrangler. The powertrain can be combined either with a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. As for fuel economy, there is no difference between the two transmission choices in the two-door version.

Overall, the 2015 Jeep Wrangler is a vehicle designed with very specific people in mind. If you don’t count yourself among the daring travelers who enjoy dangerous terrains, then you won’t like anything about this SUV. If, however, you need a vehicle that can take a beating, then this is it.

Power and Performance:

Unchanged for 2015 is the traditional 3.6-liter V6 powerplant that will again combine with either the standard 6-speed manual transmission or the available 5-speed automatic transmission for 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Both transmissions are again expected to flaunt their off-road prowess with hill-start assist and hill-descent control, but mileage numbers are still below par in this age of resource conservatism at 17 mpg city/21 highway for 2-door versions with either transmission, 16/21 for Wrangler Unlimited iterations with the stick shift, and 16/20 for automatic-equipped Unlimited trims.

Interiors and Special Features:

Choose the base Sport model and the 2015 Wrangler's interior will have cloth seats and a look and feel that can be described as functional. Move up through the trim levels and you will eventually get to such alternatives as a Sahara Unlimited with 2-tone leather and the touch of, if not outright luxury, at least plush comfort. In back, the rear seat folds flat to create a generous, handy and flat load space that's perfect for all the gear that off-roading sometimes requires.

Safety features:

Standard safety features aboard every 2015 Wrangler iteration should include 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, and front and side-mounted airbags, with the re-debuting Willys Wheeler, along with its Sahara and Rubicon siblings, additionally offering supplemental side-mounted airbags. Further standard safety stuff for all trim levels includes front fog/driving lights and a post-collision safety system. A remote antitheft alarm also returns as standard equipment in the Sahara and higher trims.
