Quick Look

The Jeep Patriot is essentially on its way out, with the 2015 model expected to be the last. Instead of making a final push to the finish, Jeep has essentially abandoned all efforts with a lack of any significant changes. At least, the Patriot still has its inexpensive pricing and Jeep DNA to fall back on.

Full Review

The Jeep Patriot is clinging to life in a somewhat surprising return for 2015. This compact crossover has been around since the 2007 model year and has had its highs, but the glory days for the Patriot are definitely over. Jeep has focused its attention on developing the Cherokee and has somewhat abandoned the Patriot, which hasn’t seen a facelift since 2011 or a major overhaul at all.

The Patriot is falling far behind its competitors and even its newly-upgraded siblings. Despite the impending discontinuation of the Patriot, Jeep has only made minor changes to the Patriot such as deleting the nifty cargo light/flashlight combo and adding navigation as an option to the mid-level trim. The Patriot is available in three trim levels: Sport, Latitude and Limited. This five-passenger compact crossover exists for the Jeep lover on a tight budget.

The Jeep Patriot carries on the same exterior shape that it had for years. That being said, the Patriot manages to stay true to its Jeep roots in design and function. The seven-slot grille sits bold on the front end and purposeful fender flares highlight the size of the wheels. The vehicle’s boxy layout is nothing new in a Jeep, but it makes for optimal space on the inside, which we appreciate. The company also adds modest standard features such as 16-inch steel wheels, roof rails, fog lights and manual exterior mirrors. Moving up the trims will buy you some upgrades and additions such as 17-inch alloy wheels and a sunroof.

The interior of the Patriot is really starting to show its age in terms of design and has a tough time keeping up with the competition in this aspect. The cabin is riddled with hard plastics and a lack of features. The base model is still plagued by a lack of power accessories, giving the interior a feel of an economy car rather than a competitive crossover. The space inside the cabin is decent, although rear passengers will find limited legroom, while front passengers get modestly comfortable and supportive seats. The cargo space on the Patriot is also quite limited, considering the segment, with 23 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, but folding the seats will raise its storage capacity to 53.5 cubic feet. By comparison, the CR-V offers 70.9 cubic feet of space with its seats down, which is a big a difference.

The technology features inside the Patriot are also pretty lacklustre and don’t really compare to what is available, even within the Jeep family. The Patriot gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while the Cherokee gets a vastly superior 8.4-inch touchscreen. It’s the details like these that highlight Jeep’s lack of focus on the Patriot.

As for powertrains, the Patriot offers a variety of configurations, depending on the trim level. The base engine is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that can generate 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque. This engine is featured on the Sport and Latitude trims with front-wheel drive. The standard transmission is a five-speed manual, but a six-speed automatic is available. There is also a continuously variable transmission that is available on some sub-trims.

The top-of-the-line Limited gets a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that produces 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. This engine is optional on the front-drive Sport and Latitude trims, but standard on the front-drive Limited.

All of the trims are available with a choice of all-wheel or four-wheel drive. The four-wheel-drive vehicle is only available with the continuously variable transmission, while all the other 2.4-litre Patriots offer either the five-speed manual or six-speed automatic.

Overall, the 2015 Jeep Patriot is meant for a very specific buyer. The compact crossover would likely only be appealing to a Jeep lover shopping on a tight budget, given the competition. Unfortunately for the Patriot, Jeep has really invested its time elsewhere and this vehicle is well on its way out.

Power and Performance:

The 2015 Patriot offers a variety of powertrain configurations. The base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque; it's only featured in Sport and Latitude trims with front-wheel drive. A five-speed manual is the default transmission, with a six-speed automatic available. There's also a CVT that comes only with the Altitude or High Altitude package.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Patriot's interior has been tweaked over the years, but it's still one of the most basic you'll find, with cheap, hard plastics covering most surfaces and a tilt-only steering wheel that can compromise driver comfort. The Sport model is the worst offender because of its lack of standard power accessories and air-conditioning, but even the Limited's layout looks and feels more like that of an economy car than a competitive crossover. On the bright side, the front seats are pretty comfortable, providing satisfactory support for long stints in the saddle. Rear passengers won't be as pleased, however, as legroom is tight and the bottom cushion sits low, largely negating the benefits of the reclining rear seatbacks (Latitude and Limited only).

Safety features:

The front-wheel-drive Sport and Latitude trims (including the Altitude and High Altitude variants) come standard with antilock brakes that include front discs and rear drums. The front-wheel-drive Limited and all Patriots with Freedom Drive I or Freedom Drive II get disc brakes front and rear. Traction and stability control are standard regardless, as are front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags.
