Quick Look

The 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe delivers a roomy cabin, plenty of neat features and a solid 3.3-litre V6 powertrain. The engine is not the most powerful offering around, producing only 290 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque, but it’s solid. It’s also worth noting that the Santa Fe is not the biggest crossover on the market, so those who need it to fit in more than seven passengers should probably look elsewhere.

Full Review

The 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe is manages to be two different vehicles at the same time: the regular and the Sport. The latter is a compact five-seat crossover, while the former is a larger seven-seater that’s here to replace the poor-performing Veracruz. So, if you are looking for a roomy cabin, then this should be your Santa Fe of choice. It’s not the biggest or most powerful crossover on the market, but for the MSRP of just above $30,000 it should do just fine.

Outside, the 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe looks like an extended version of the Santa Fe Sport, but without the athletic-looking rear-side-window kick-up. The new Santa Fe manages to look both contemporary and handsome, wisely avoiding the swooping lines that you would find in Hyundai’s passenger cars. There are plenty of nice, little details too. For instance, even the base GLS model has body-coloured outside mirrors and bumpers. Add to that integrated fog lights, roof rails and 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and you get the upscale Limited trim. That said, the GLS isn’t faring much worse, getting a set of decent 18-inch aluminum alloys.

Inside, the 2015 Santa Fe offers quite a bit of space, which is surprising when you compare to the much smaller Sport model. The driver a panoramic front view, which is always welcome – though the rearward view is less wide, sadly. That said, you will never have to rely purely on your mirrors. The base model gets stain-resistant cloth fabric that feels nice to the touch. You will also find neat audio and climate-control knobs along with glove-friendly buttons. Generally speaking, all the materials are superb, even the rubber that lines the inside of the door pulls. In terms of space, the first two rows can comfortably fit four adults – two in each – but the third row is only good for kids. That said, the cargo area in the Santa Fe is a little too small when compared to the competition, being able to contain only 13.5 cubic feet of stuff behind the third row – but you can expand that to 40 cubic feet by folding those seats.

Under the hood, the new Hyundai Santa Fe has only one engine of choice – a 3.3-litre V6 that can crank out 290 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. There aren’t many transmission choices either; as in you only get one – a six-speed automatic. It does, however, provide good throttle response and easy shifts. Front-wheel drive is standard, but you can opt for all-wheel drive, if you wish. But no matter which configuration you go for, you will able to tow up to 5,000 pounds, which is plenty.

Overall, the 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe is an excellent vehicle choice if you are a looking for a decently-sized crossover. It has enough seats for four adults along with solid towing capabilities. It’s not the most powerful vehicle of its kind, but it’s definitely worth the price.

Power and Performance:

Hyundai makes it simple to shop for a 2015 Santa Fe by offering only one engine and one transmission. In front-drive form, the SUV's 290-horsepower 3.3-liter V6 is very well matched to the 6-speed automatic transmission, with good throttle response, smooth pickup and clean, easy shifts. The AWD Santa Fe, though, could do with some more low-end grunt to get it moving. All that said, Hyundai's 2015 Santa Fe is comfortable towing up to 5,000 pounds of trailer, boat or anything else you'd like to haul.

Interiors and Special Features:

There's plenty of room in the 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe, and the driver's front view is panoramic (the rearward view is less broad, but you're never reduced to driving purely with the mirrors). The base model's stain-resistant cloth fabric feels good, plus the audio and climate-control knobs and buttons are glove-friendly big. All materials are impressive right down to the rubber that lines the inside of the door pulls. The first two rows are completely livable for adults, while the third row is a decent kid's row. The Santa Fe does give up some cargo area compared to the competition, however.

Safety features:

The 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe models score well for safety.

All models have the usual standard front, side, and curtain airbags, as well as a driver knee airbag, for a total of seven. Hill-start and downhill assist also are standard, along with anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control.

Blind-spot monitors and parking sensors were newly available for the 2014 model year, and blind-spot monitors became standard for 2015.

The long-wheelbase Santa Fe hasn't yet been crash-tested by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). But the shorter-wheelbase Santa Fe Sport earns top 'good' scores in all categories of IIHS testing it has been put through.
